Water Water...North Atlantic style.

ausf

Master at Arms
With the incoming Revell U boat, I started to wrap my head around making water. I want to go with serious North Atlantic swells, much higher than I think could be achieved with any type of water effects paste and I'm not about to drop a few hundred bucks on the amount of clear resin it would take. I'm talking bow out, side hull slamming 25 foot swells. :blink

To experiment, I ended up grabbing a CD case (styrene) and a heat gun, melting and twisting until is was wave like. Then I grabbed the nearest green and blue Vallejo shades and spread it on the underside, swirling and making a mess of it. I added some Vallejo water efffects on top for texture and tiny waves, then hit the top side with a lot of Future, some microballoons and diluted white paint.

I like where it's headed but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I like the painting from underneath on clear plastic, it gives a nice transparency. I guess I'll be ordering some large sheets of clear styrene and seting up some vacu forms.

If there are any refs you know of, or movies that I can look for to get ideas, please give me a heads up. I plan on spending a few hours on the interwebs surfing, but I doubt there are too many photos of U boats in high seas, but maybe other ships, etc. that can apply. I'll be taking another look at Das Boot, if there are any other sub flicks that you think I might find the scene I'm looking for please let me know.

Here's some pics, in the first you can see the right side without the Future/MB/paint treatment, just some light Vallejo water effects. The last is the paint on the underside. Besides the white trails, there's no paint on top at all. I'm trying to work out adding some lighting from underneath to enhance the effect.

That's amazing! Das Boot would be the one movie I would suggest, lots of scenes where they are riding the waves. Especially the scene where the pass Thompson's sub, get two for the price of one.

As much time as I have spent in the N/A I would say that you have nailed it. I even get chills from the memories of becoming a blue nose. Cold, windy and very wet bone chilling memories.

Thanks guys, I'm glad it reads well.

Tom, that's a great idea. I grew up watching Sir Lawrence and the World At Wat series (probably why I'm so fascinated by history now), but completely forgot V at S. Turns out Amazon Prime has them all free. :dude

Bob, I think that's the scene I was thinking of, or maybe when they give up looking for a convoy? I have the Director's cut around here somewhere, I'll be watching it soon with my son (have to wait until Mom's out for the evening :hmmm ).

I don't envy you Paul. I grew up on the water in the Northeast, but most of my time 'engaging' with it was the Pacific or Carribean. Anything higher than Cape Cod scares the crap out of me.

Can't find the one we're talking about but did find this.

Slight list to the left breaking though the waves. best at about 2 minutes. The seas are not as rough as the scene we're talking about.

I got the full 6 hour version on the DVR, just can't figure out how to get it OFF the DVR.

Thanks for that. In the long run, that may be better, I could sculpt the crew facing the weather. If I went as big as I plan, the crew would not be topside.

I'm working on a tanker crewman wearing U boat leathers, I guess I could apply that research to 1/72. :facepalm

I just found my DVD, it's the Uncut version, not Director's cut. It's the full 293 minutes. My wife's going to have to be really out to get through this one...

Looks really good to me. Maybe if you asked Sharkman he could take some pics on his trip end this month. He might be too close to shore, but maybe not.
