Bill's '96 Thunderbird * * F I N I S H E D * *

Fast Food - Bill Elliotts '96 Thunderbird

Wonder if there's enough interest here for a NASCAR Campaign sometime in the future ??? :hmmm [/i]

I've been thinking about a "Competition Campaign" as anything to do with racing. Cars, planes boats, etc :D

Wooo... now that would be cool. Very inclusive, those sleek Snyder Trophy Racers of the 30s or the WWII Vets of the Reno Air Races, Nascar, F1, Dirt trackin' DRAG Racin'.

I got nothing else to do today, I'll see if I can thunk up a good name.

Careful Bob... don't hurt yerself as that Thunkin' can be hazardous ta one's health :smack

I do have an ol' DW's #17 in the stash... :hmmm

Starting the 'White Flag' lap now. Test fitting the 'cage', chassis and body: So far all fits nice and snug - there's usually a problem when you get to this point assembling any car kit. Patience & CA glue are your very best friends at this point in the process !!

Well I'd hoped to be posting 'completed project' photos today, but sadly not. It would be so easy to make a dash for the checkered flag from the point I'm at now, but because I'm so close and as mentioned the steering & suspension sub-assemblies are so crucial, I decided to break them down into two bench sessions. So as this is written the cage & chassis are finished, the tyres decalled and drying whilst the glue is setting on the rear axle/prop shaft, rear 'A-Frame' and the lower steering arms.

What I'll try and do in the next session is bring these elements together and then I'll be done. To continue the 'Last Lap metaphor... I've just coming out of turn 3 at Daytona - and we all remember what happened to Dale Earnhardt in 1990, right ??

So these are the last pics of the insides that you'll see before it's all buttoned-up. As I mentioned earlier the cage & chassis went together without a hitch, and this afternoon, the steering & suspension were with some difficulty persuaded to join the rest of the project. I've offset the front wheels to the right just for added interest.

Tomorrow I'll mask and spray the various radiators in the nose, nice break from all that glue-wrangling over the last couple of days !!

Well it was bound to happen, at the very last moment those heavy wheel'n tyre assemblies decided to give me a really hard time, but I wrestled them in to submission eventually, just don't ever ask me to remove them again. :bat

As a starting point for re-learning those skills needed for model car building in general and NASCAR building in particular it was an invaluable exercise and I really enjoyed it on that level alone. On a competition table it would be at best ignored, but that wasn't the point of this build, it was just for the cabinet, and just to help me feed my neglected my stock-car craving - and it worked very well on that level :v

So as ever, guys, thanks for riding shotgun with me, please be free with any comments, questions and criticisms... That's all for the moment, I'm off to Mike's site to order a 2001 Dodge, some decals to go with it and some decals for my Pro Race build...

AFN, enjoy the rest of your weekends whatever you're doing, especially if you're lucky enough to watch the Talladega 500, not that I'm jealous in any way... :vmad
