1/48 warthog. FINISHED

Amazing gun, the aircraft that was built around a gun. A lot like the F14, they developed the weapon system (AIM 54) before the weapon platform.

OK hands up, i cheated. :)

i ordered the brass PE sheet set to get the canopy frame and gun sight etc and it came with the pre printed instrument sheet.... something i wasnt intending to use however.................

I did cut off the half round gas cylinder and replica it with a bit of brass tube painted green so its more 3D.
top of the dash needs to be flat black but i dont have any till tomorrow. I need to paint the top of the seat and add some straps when i have worked out how to make them, probably some 0.5mm evergreen stip.

Just for Bob we have some wider head pads

I recently joined another group. Its not a forum based group like this, you cant really post your work, its more of an on-line magazine.
some really good builders on their and guess what ? they sometimes use Pre coloured PE as well so i dont feel so bad now :)

All the pictures i can find of this gun show it in pristine condition. My guess is even on the aircraft this was a precision piece of equip and very well looked after, not a grimy piece of ld gun metal

I've seen that site before but wasn't sure about the pay wall, guess they have a better idea of financing the site than I do.

Wish I had worked on the A10 like I was scheduled to do during my basic training. You gotta rememeber that the Gau8 on display is just that, on display. They would have it cleaned up nicely. But to your point they would keep it in high maintenance because there's a lot of moving parts and that gun is the reason that aircraft is in existence.

Found this on reddit

Thats great Bob, the instruction clearly show this as Matt black but your pictures show it as bare metal/plated metal.

i spent a few hours on the PE last night for these parts. I had forgotten how small PE can be in 1/48.

You need tweezers to even pick this up as finger pressure to get a grip will crush it :) You can see in your picture and the part above on side of the belt feed is radiused which was fun

You should see the machine that loads that ammo into the drum!

Most excellent PE work Paddy. :notworthy

Flat black would be a good base for some gunmetal.

One other self imposed problem
I read somewhere that i need 35g of nose weight to stop it tail sitting.
Of course once you start opening things up its hard to see where i can put this weight without it being visible.
so far i have got 21g of air rifle pellets in the Ammo drum which i thought was rather fitting

another small problem is the Drum is connected to the gun by the rigid plastic ammo belts in the kit. If you replace those with the PE then you loose all rigidity. The PE instructions are seriously lacking but appear to imply you need to fold the PE round the plastic parts but in the finished pictures they dont show this however its probably the only real way forward as there are no fitting to attach the gun to the fuselage...it just hangs from the Ammo drum..

It's not implausible that a jack stand would be used during maintenance. can't find any images but I can remember seeing them, shoot they have them for KCs.

I have a way to remove material from a part so it ends up a given thickness. It starts by setting up a drill press with a 2.5 to 3mm "very sharp" drill. I use a rounded post under the drill which is centered up. The important part is that the drill press can be set to do a given depth with a little accuracy. Side to side wobble, no problem, depth change, not good.
Anyway, pictures are better than words. Hope this gives and idea and helps. I have several planes that I am going to do this to the tail surfaces when I get to them.

This was just an extra fuselage part I had setting around. As you should have been able to tell It wasn't damaged on the important areas and is still fully usable. If the plastic had been thicker as it usually is on larger scale models the holes would have been deeper and more material would have been removed.

The important things to remember are having a drill press that the down stop can be safely set, the drill speed isn't too fast, and a sharp bit so it cuts nice and smooth without grabbing.

Thanks Paul, what you need to do is just get a stone and take the sharp edge off the drill. In the business we called it "backing off"
A backed off drill will not snatch or try and lift the work, especially useful if drilling brass or trying to open a hole up in brass., dont over do it :)
i cant post diagrams but this shows the idea

Have i taken on too much ?
the addition of the eduard electronics bay very much interferes with the Aires gun bay :)

DSC_4501.JPG

no problem adding the electronics box

DSC_4502.JPG

But the interior panel for the gun bay will not fit with the electronic bay open.

solution is probably to cut a section out of the interior panel.
A lot of the gun bay bears little resemblance to the instructions in typical aftermarket ( Aires) half hearted fashion but i suppose if you take this sort of thing on they just assume you will work to your own plan rather than even need instructions anyway. ?
some idea of where to fold the PE and the sequence for multi folds would b helpful along with where these PE parts actually fit in the kit ?

Can you thin down the electronic bay back wall till the PE gun bay wall serves as the back?

The gun looks great!

I joined the halves of the fuselage today and found some space up front for some weight., not a lot but maybe enough.
DSC_4507.JPG

It looks like there is space next to the barrels but the front wheel well takes up most of that

DSC_4508.JPG

teh front wheel well is the wore fitting part i have come across in a model for a very long time...

DSC_4509.JPG

A bit of fitting needed above :)
