Probably one of my all time great war movies was the Cruel sea. It was a prescribed book in English classes at school and the film was just so atmospheric and of the Era. Being in black and white helped and they managed to find authentic British weather and north Atlantic seas.
Revel do a RN Corvette 1/144 scale. I dont know it its accurate or any good but its cheap. I have looked a t a few builds and they seem to turn out OK and i dont see anything that might be a problem for a 1st time ship builder.
What i do notice is the railings ladders and general fittings are a bit clunky but could be remade in soldered brass. I think `1/144 would be to large for flat PE on thinks like railings.

I would guess if a railing was about 50mm or 2" it would be about .35mm in scale which is about the size of the wire i use for motorcycle spokes..

unfortunately the only survivor is in Canada and with the price of petrol at the moment that's a long drive .

Just thinking out loud at the moment.

Bet you money there's a PE set for this boat.

PONTOSMODEL has this large brass, PE and wood set for the kit. It is in stock at Hobby Decal (Korea), BNA Model World (Aus), MBK (Ger), Sprue Brothers (US) and Squadron (US). There are some other shops that have it as well.

And when it comes down to it, you only need one kidney.

While working my build I'm watching a guy on YouTube who's working on Trumpeter's HMS Hood in 1/200 scale. He's using styrene rod for a lot of railing.

Yep, I was gonna say, use styrene rod like Tim said, should be easy enough on the bends with some care, and a heck of a lot less time consuming. Let er rip, Paddy, first time for almost everything, right?

Reviews say the PE set is worth having and you would use about 50% of it which sounds pretty std for PE.;.. My problem with any PE is its 2D and with 3D printing its pretty much obsolete now. I am not sure on this scale how 2D railings would work but in this game i suppose you have to run with what you'r given . Styrene might work ,,,but on HMS Hood in 1200 scale a 2" railing would be .0015" not really visible at half a human hair, at this scale 1/144 its .008" so essential to the model and would look odd being flat ;-).

Something I do with PE when it is supposed to be round is to first scuff the sides with very fine grit sand paper (1000 or 1500) Just enough to make the surface "not smooth". Then I run an bead of thick CA along the surface. The Bob Smith brand that I use then usually sets itself up in a short while and I run successive beads until it is fairly round on things like railings and such. Paint then does a good job of finishing the shape up.

I have your favored picture on DVD in the meticulous black and white format it was originally lit and shot in. A fine story! It took great courage and intestinal fortitude to go to war in the converted, round-bottomed whaling ships of the Flower class!

I would, of coarse, applaud your choice, if you so decide. The model you consider was originally tooled and released in 2016.
Much superior, detail wise, to the old Matchbox PK-901 1/72 Flower class Corvette issued in '79.
The Big Ed #5343 P/E set for this kit was released about the same time, but you might want to be sitting down when you see the price! Scalemates says the p/e set is discontinued. Hmm.
