Napoleonic Bust

Well as I have lost the use of my left hand for the next three months I have to find something to do that has a minimum of assembly and busts came to mind B) .
Never having done one before and only three 35th size figures to my credit I jumped on U-Tube and looked at some face painting stuff from Andy and from Last Cavalry while waiting for the goodies to turn up.

I was surprised that the flash that was on the model and you have no idea how hard it is to remove resin with one hand.There was a large amount on the chin but I had removed it then decided to take a pic.

I have grabbed some Mr Surfacer 1200 as a primer as I believe that its a favoured primer for figures.
The first task for me is to get the skin tone right as its a dark tone what would the best base colour to start with ?.
Any tips and words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated

Two severed tendons on the top of my left hand ,ring and middle finger at the first knuckle as well as knuckle damage. A work accident an not my doing :vmad :vmad
Surgury has worked now its all physio to retrain the fingers in a medieval contraption every hour

So anything that I chose to do has to be one handed.Funnily enough the doc said to start a hobby to get through this phase and to manage the mind. :frantic
Anyhoo I'am going to attack figures and such for a while so any tips,comments,laughter is greatly appreciated.

Hot dang, take a hand and told to start a hobby. Dr excuse to build models. Well just think, when you're done with the midevil portion you'll be better, stronger, faster...ok I've heard that somewheres before.

First question, what medium are you using? I use mostly artist oil's for figure painting.

Good luck on the rehab. When my Dad was in the CF he had his thumb cut. The military horse doctor stitched him up and was surprised when he took the stitches out a couple of weeks later that my Dad had very little movement in the thumb. They sent him to a civilian specialist who found they had missed the severed tendon. Apparently there is a 'spare' tendon in the wrist the he was able to splice into the thumb. After rehab he only had about 80% use of the thumb.

Rich I am going to be using Acrylics from the Vallejo stable as I like the quick drying time and the clean up is a bit easier at the mo.
jknaus thanks for the links Dave is very good and is easy to follow ,will check out Joe's stuff to.
Right I made a start on this but I felt the tone was to pink at the time.
I wanted a browner tone to his face but as I added darker shades the face ended up looking like a piece of toast.

These pics are before I made him look like a toast slice. I have since stripped the paint off and re-primed the face and will have another try.

I think the shade was okay and as you add shadows and highlights it would have changed. Also something I was told is don't paint the iris plain white. A little touch of blue to it which will bring it more lifelike in scale. Not a lot mind you. Other wise experiment. There are a lot of ways to do things and borrowing fromo all to make your own style will make it more fun. Watching with interest.

I agree with you on the shade,now that I look at it in these pics it's not to bad.I think I am focusing to much on the box art color rather than what feels good.As for the eye shade I used Pale Sand as Dave did in his vids but it it's certainly a bit stark so will try again.

Ok had another crack at this,this time I used a base of Flesh base with a touch of Brown sand.

Then I went through the highlighting and shadow process which does not show up in these pics as I am only using my phone for the pics and the lights at my workbench are rather bright.

The eyes were the next task so before I had a crack at them I watched a Last Cavalry vid which is well worth a watch. At this angle the eye on the right looks a little misshapen but when viewed from front on it is good as I wanted to match the slight squint of that eye.

Hi all haven't done much to this as I've been under the weather and the hand has been giving me grief but I have had a crack at the leopard pattern on the helmet and made a total mess of it so I had another go at it but the result was rather cartoonish so I stripped the area and re painted the base and will try again.

Will post up the further attempts when done.

Very very nicely done. I like it. On one of my figures I had to do a leopard skin shield and could not do it so I went looking online for leopard skins. I finally found something and printed it out and glued it on and it doesnt look bad. Makeing a decal would be better. Maybe that is an idea that will help?

Thanks everyone for the comments,even though its not to bad the I was trying to replicate this pattern.

As I mentioned its been stripped back so I can try a different tack by using lighter colors and slowly building them up.
It's all a learning curve
