WWII Aircraft codes...

Can someone answer a question for me....

I'm trying to figure out the correct positioning of some aircraft code letters, mainly for German and British planes.

I thought my understanding was that German plane codes would read left to right regardless of the side of the aircraft (i.e. 9K+VV on both sides, not VV+9K on the starboard side) where as British planes would not read left to right (i.e. ZD B on the port, B ZD on starboard).

I've recently seen a drawing of a German Me 410 (3U+CK) where on the port side it was drawn as CK+3U. :huh:

Can anyone tell me if this is wrong?

I would have thought the port side of this plane should read "3U+AB"

I've yet to see a contemporary photograph of a unit code to the right of the Balkenkreuz. It should always appear to the left.

Just to be clear, the unit code is the "3U"?

Yes, 3U was for ZG 26.
