1:48 Spitfire IX * * F I N I S H E D * *

Re: 1:48 Spitfire IX (#1)

I like it. I've alays wanted to get a Mk IX and a Mk XVI to round out my collection of Spitfires. Now I'm learning to avoid certain kits so as to avoid modelling headaches. My hat's off to you for perdevering with a poor kit - whichever one that is.

Will you be adding black stripes to this one?

Cheers

Yes, it's still a work-in-progress. Here's a profile of the aircraft I'm trying to build:

It's Wg. Cmdr 'John' Plagis machine when he was the boss of the Culmhead wing in June '44. Thanks all for the really positive comments, they keep me going-on.

1:48 Spitfire IX - Back for D-Day !!

Holy thread resurrections Batman (thumps fist into palm...)

Yes, started at the New Zealand Armistice show in Cambridge, last summer (or winter if you’re reading this in the Northern Hemisphere !!), put to one side since December and brought back to the workbench in time for the 6th of June….

….Hmmmm B) .

Anyways, added a little oil wash or two, just to dirty it down but not too much, and this afternoon, shot two thin coats of Humbrol ‘Matt Cote’ mixed roughly 50/50 with cellulose thinner.

Looks OK to me, but I’m terribly biased !!

More soon.

Kit – Hasegawa 1:48
Paint – Tamiya, Humbrol, Xtracolour enamels.
Decals – Superscale 48-???, Model Alliance roundels & fin flash, kit stencils.
Extras – Airwaves resin propeller & spinner, Ultracast exhausts, Eduard Zoom set.

Supermarine Spitfire LFIXc
Assigned to: Sqn. Ldr. ‘John’ Plagis
OC, 126 Squadron
RAF Culmhead, Somerset
Summer 1944.

A few months back I posted an ICM MkIXe, which was started at the same time as this one. That kit fought me all the way even down to the final coat of varnish. This one behaved impeccably throughout. Enjoyed every minute of this build.

I know there’s a lot of ‘new wisdom’ going around regarding this particular machine; to be honest, whilst I appreciate the research others are doing, this was always going to finished as close as possible to the profile in Ospreys ‘Late Mark Spitfire Aces’ – because that was the visual that inspired the build.

Thanks for taking the time to look. As ever, happy to take any comment, criticism or questions.
