1/32 P-38M "M" for madness

I know, I know. Been to long...Trying to get back to this 2 yr. project and since these( the turbo's) will be quite noticeable on a black airframe, I want them to POP. I need advice, pics and hopefully some "how to's"to get them right. So, can anyone help?? I'm still looking for a good LEGO set to use for a jig to connect the booms. So I'm skipping around and trying to get some of the smaller parts done....TIA....Harv :

Hey Harv, I was wondering where you were the other day. You need pictures of the superchargers? I'll keep a look out, maybe someone will step up.

Thanks MP. really need color ones if you can. Also need someone to "show" me how to do it, what colors to use, dry brushing....all that sort of thing.....Harv

B-17 and B-24 used the same turbochargers:

I hope this helps and great to see you back on it!

Harv it looks like Burnt Iron unless you want to do the heat distressed look. The Model Masters Metalizer Burnt Iron should do nicely on this. then maybe some light rust pigments if you have them? Strange to see ZC on that housing, you'd think the heat would melt that off.

I don't thing the ZC. or the aluminum primed ones have been run yet. The silver paint is a heat resistant paint for jet engines but it will turn brown after some use. Turbos get quite hot.

I don't think there's an on/off option. It works on exhaust gas and the output is a function of altitude.

Cheers, Christian B)

Thought they could "throttle" (for lack of better word) the boost it gave. Guess the heat would still build up even if they were running low power.

Wasnt there a bypass gate so it they didnt want to boost the hot exhaust carried on out the exhaust without turning the fan? Course its still hot exhaust.
James

There's a Waste gate, I think they called it, I think that was for allowing exhaust to escape because the compressor could not keep up with the flow of gases. To keep the pressure down on the uncompress side of the compressor...but i'm guessing, only seen the diagrams.

Sorry guys I don't have the answer to that. Before my time. I'm only speaking on theory.
If you're not going to run it, there has to be an exhaust bypass somewhere. I would guess like a cutout on a car.
It does look like it has a gate where you might be able to control the amount of boost . ( maybe ??? )

Cheers, Christian B)

Actually the term " waste gate " would work for what you just described. Unable to use.

I think that it probably goes back to my feeble explanation of altitude function.

The air is too dense on the ground and it is not able to compress it further. You can perform more boosting as the altitude increases and the air thins out.

From the Pilot's Manual (what? So I own a lot of manuals... sheesh, it's not like I am a librarian)

Good stuff Saul, a good reminder that was always more going on in that cockpit than stick, rudder and throttle jockeying.

As promised, some updates to the turbo's
First off is the stock part..

next is some .010 card cut down and glued in to represent the flange not included on kit part. Needs cleaning up

Started sanding and a comparison

Would like to get feedback from you guys. next will be weathering.....Harv

While you may notice it, the fences inboard of the turbochargers only appear on early Lightnings; such as the two in flight images I posted.
