Wingnut Wings Sopwith Ships Camel

I'm still zoned in on Wingnuts
Got the Ships Camel on deck now.

What scheme? There's one that's all CDL that represents an aircraft that was recently recovered. Really interesting to me.

Or this one.

I got this really nice motor to build for her.

And some spoked wheels but unsure it'll work on this aircraft. The rims look a little undersized but there's optional fat tires. (I hadn't had a fat tire in a while, they still making it?)

Anyone know any other goodies to go with her?

I vote for the ships Camel, it could offer some really good options for weathering . Your problem might be as they were not recoverable after launch they would have all been as new in appearance....

I saw that Rich, I'd like to see it on a finished build. I would be worried about cutting a wire too short.

There's one scheme where they did a random coverage of PC10 all over but I think I like the idea of the newly skinned CDL.

The other thing i'm looking forward to on this build is seeing the difference between the Se5, one of the first releases from WnW to the Camel which was one of the last one.

What's the difference in a Sopwith 2F1 Ships Camel and a Sopwith F1 Camel? Aparently the cabane struts.

Instructions show take these off. Could not help noticing the holes for rigging attachment being at the base of the struts. Something that was not on the SE5.
Another note, I really love this thick body acrylic stuff, I'll have some photos of the wood work tomorrow.

For bonus points you can build a base for it. Camel 2F.1 N6764 on Q Turret HMS Lion.

HMS Lion Camel.jpg

The forward turrets were A and B, the midship turret was Q and the aft turret was X. Each were armed with two 13.5 guns. Q and X turrets were fitted with aircraft platforms in early 1918.

At 1600 hrs 31 May 1916 during the Battle of Jutland, Q turret was hit by a 12 in round on the joint of the 9 in thick turret face plate and the 3.5 in thick roof plate above the left gun. All the crew in the gun house were killed or wounded. Although fatally wounded with both legs severed, Turret Commander Major Francis Harvey, Royal Marine Light Infantry issued his final order to flood the magazine. A smouldering fire ignited ready propellent charges in the lower part of the turret mount killing most of the magazine and shell room crew stationed there. The magazine doors were severely buckled by the gas pressure from the explosion but held by the seawater in the magazine. Had Major Harvey not ordered the magazine to be flooded it would have exploded and the Lion's back broken. Major Harvey was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross when he "with great presence of mind and devotion to duty ordered the magazine to be flooded, thereby saving the ship." There were 6 officers and 93 men killed and 43 men wounded in Q turret.

Shortly after Lion was hit, her sister ship Queen Mary was hit twice and her forward magazine exploded. She sank shortly after losing 1,266 of her 1,286 crew.

Cheers,

I wish I was that modeler Rich. Thanks for that photo, I haven't seen it but it's mentioned in the instructions. That CDL looks a bit more worn than a fresh cover doesn't it?

The CABANE struts were aerodynamic steel tubes in place of wood. The upper and lower centre wing sections are narrower than on the F.1 and results in shorter wingspan.

There is a break point just aft of the lower wing so the tail could be removed and the 2F.1 could be stowed onboard ship. When you get to the rigging phase, you'll notice the elevator control cables are run externally to simplify the tail removal.

Wouldn't have taken long to get dirty sitting between the funnels from coal fired boilers and sea spray.

Remember your build when we talked about wing ribs showing through. the camel on the turret shown from the underside looks like it has transparent wings :)

I think, but haven't checked, that WnW supplied decal for the shadow on the underside of the upper wing. Yes top of the rib will be light, bottom will be dark.
