So I had been planning on going to the IPMS Oregon model show that takes place at the Evergreen Aviation Museum. It used to be if you were entering a model then you just paid the 5 dollar entry fee to the contest but now you have to pay the insane 20 dollar museum entry fee as well. For my wife and I to make the 600 mile roundtrip and then get lodging,food,gas, and vendor table items would end up being probably 500 bucks. Am I just out of line in thinking that paying 25 bucks to enter a contest comes off as elitist and a bit over the top? I realize the national convention is 50 bucks but hey that is the nationals. What would you do? Would you go or say nope and not hand out your money?

Being in the contest would you have access to things different than regular?
I would say if there is nothing special I would not go. Money is tight right now.
I've been trying to go back to the Heartland Museum for two years now. If I have the time I don't have the cash or cash and no time.

Hell Man Ryan I will pay $25 dollars to walk through the Sprues Goose and they have that great restored B17 there also. If I remember the evergreen museum has Howard Huges private colection of planes in it.
Outside there is also a few Russian birds if I can remember rightly what my friend told me when he was there. Hell stuff taking models with and just check out the planes, the builds and the vendors :drinks

That is a good point. Nothing special or extra comes from being in the contest. To be honest about half of the museum's collection is outside where you don't even have to pay to see it. What is inside is their WWII stuff and that stuff is all behind velvet ropes so you really can't even get close enough to take decent photos. They do have a B-17 that you can go inside of but that is an extra fee on top of the entry fee.
Problem is Dave when they say you can "walk" through the Spruce Goose. What they really mean is go into a 10 foot by 10 foot enclosed room and look at the belly of the plane. If you want to actually gain access to the rest of the plane it is an extra 50 bucks. The B-17 you can't even get up past the radio room.
They don't play do they? don't know.. to be able to see the H-4 Hercules, think I would have to come off that money, especially knowing it goes for the upkeep of the aircraft. Wonder if they still keep the engines and everything under full maintenance like they did when Hughes was alive.
Times are hard, I suspect the museum needs to make up for losses in tourism.

No real connection that I know of. All they have is the H-4. If I remember correctly it is just on loan and not really owned by Evergreen. My thing is I have already been to the museum several times so it isn't like it is anything I've not seen before. Naw I don't think they are covering for losses. They just built a massive waterpark right next door. Seem to be busier then ever.
A quick update. So I emailed the IPMS group that is putting this event on. Finally got an email back and was told that there is a discounted entry fee for the space section where the event will take place. 12 dollars instead of 20. I figure I've already seen the air museum 4 times now but have never had the chance to see the space museum. So hopefully Sarah will decide that I can go lol. Will probably have to suffer through some terrible chick flick but hey I do what I have to do hehe. The guy also mentioned that the museum doesn't like to let it be known that they do have a split museum entry fee like that. Will still get to see plenty of jets and tanks outside though.
