I'm wondering if the Spitfire Mk IX exhausts pipes would be similar, or the same. If so, the angle the pipes attach to the engine must be considered. From the superb Monforton book "Spitfire Mk IX & XVI Engineered"
Indeed it is..and im just getting started. I would love to be able to design a civilian aircraft say one of the Cirrus versions or a Vans RV10. After messing with this for about two weeks now, there's no doubt in my mind that it could be done. You could even 3d print a mold for the clear parts to be VAC formed.
Anyways after making my first attempt at the exhaust I learned a few things on how the software works....so I went back and started over and cleaned things up a bit.
This is the first one I designed, while ok its was ruff.
This is the current version I'm working on. Now keep in mind, I have realized that to capture details at the scale we model at, it has to be a bit over the top.
And for those interested this pic I have everything turned on that it took to get to this part. You can toggle different stuff on and off so you can see what you are doing.

I was talking to a friend this weekend that has been working with 3D printing for a number of years and has a couple of resin printers. He has been trying to design some printed gears and mechanisms for the 1/8th scale Ecto 1 that is in limbo at the moment. He has been having problems with the parts shrinking after a short time and thus ending up out of the tolerances he needs for them to look and work correctly.
Just posting this here as an FYI. Of course the different resins and printers can cause these kinds of problems. If someone has any suggestions or ideas, I will pass them on.

Spent well into last night and this AM finalizing this exhaust design. The back part gave me fits. But after copious amounts of diet coke I pushed through!
This is pretty much the final form, I have tweeked it on and off today.
This is the render of my design. At 1/48 scale.
The first print shows promise.
Let's see how it looks on the kit!
Compared to the kit plastic part.
This is the piece that determines the angle at which the exhaust sits on the eduard kit. Like a glove!
The rest are some tweaks to areas like the end stiffener ring. Made the hollow tubes a bit deeper. The weld line more pronounced. And a few others.
This is a comparison of the profile between my resin part and the kit plastic.
And lastly....thinking of you Moon, I pulled out my Tamiya kit and just to see how they fit. The fit was ok. Unlike the eduard kit that uses a piece to set the angle, the angle for the tamiya is molded into the exhaust. I could make that..just have to go back and put it in and remove the ear on the rear. If I wanted to match the kit part.
All in all I'm extremely pleased with the out come. Now to make a shrouded version..

I missed this update the other day. WOW, looks great John!
Finally got around to printing off my ring and bead gun sight. I had no plans for dimensions that I could find..so it was all guess work. I did measure the gunsight in the eduard p51 kit. So I tried to stay around that. I do have a few issues I will have to troubleshoot.
This first pic is just various changes to the dimensions.
Here is the comparison to the kit sight. I think a tad to big..although when you look at pics online the sight was rather large.

This one shows the knob got cut off...I suspect my build plate level is off or the build plate is to close to the screen. Will probably level it with 2 pages and try again.
Next is the bead that goes on the cowling. Pretty impressed that the bead is round. I cant remember the exact dimensions on the bead but I think it was .800 or .500mm
