Macross Zero - 1/72 SV-51 "Flanker"

This is a Hasegawa 1/72 scale kit based on the Japanese anime "Macross Zero". In the anime, SV-51 is used by the anti-UN forces. You can do a google on "SV-51" to find out more about the story and this aircraft.

In the Macross Zero anime science fiction series the SV-51 was the only variable fighter developed by the Anti-U.N. forces. This top secret fighter was constructed in a collaboration between Sukhoi, IAI and Dornier with the use of alien overtechnology obtained illicitly from the U.N. variable fighter development under undisclosed circumstances.

I started this kit about 5 or 6 years ago when I started modelling but left it half complete (because I was newbie who took too big a bite then). This is the first aircraft kit I ever started work on way back then and, afew weeks back I was inspired to dig this kit out and repaint it in Russian Su-27 'Flanker' scheme for the fun of experimenting with something new.

This is the first time I ever done a splinter camo scheme and it helps that this is a sci-fi subject, I can afford some artistic licence to interpret the color and scheme.

I started by removing the decals I applied on previously.

After the cleanup this is what I started out with before painting.

Finally, after some crazy masking, this is my SV-51 in "Flanker" scheme.

I will start with the critiques going by highlighting that I did not remove the previous paint job I have done, so some of the panel line details are too faint to show when I did the pin wash. There are seam lines to be seen, gaps not filled in the wings and fuselage. The canopy have some gaps too.

Thank you for reading :)

Hi there Gambit.

That is a cool looking Future Flanker ;) . Have you ever seen the one with the winter camo job with white and greys? You might need to do another one just cause they look so cool. By the way, how did you do the paint job? is it just paint and tape, and paint and tape again, and paint one more time. Then remove 5 pounds of tape :pinch: . It is a great effect.

For the fuselage I used tamiya masking tape

You could find them in the online shops at reasonable prices, but then again the Japanese Yen has been appreciating against the other currencies lately..

There's no Minmay in Macross Zero.. the story is based on the timeline before Macross. But the CG and animation are really good since it was made in 2004(?).

I got some other Macross models in my stash, might start to do another one in a different scheme next time :silly:

Cheers!

Nice job,

Looks really cool and really rusian in that scheme..

Great stand - did you make it?

Cheers,

Jase.

Hi Jese sorry for the late reply, I haven't been in this forum in awhile.

Yes I made the stand myself using aluminium pipes and a chip block.

The pipe was bended over a bottle and then attached to the plane and chip block using epoxy glue (superglue not strong enough).

Regards.
