Zvezda Yak-130

this is looking awesome Mike!

Quite the weapons load for such a tiny jet!

:popcorn

Thanks you sir!

Some nations have purchased this aircraft for close air support which was part of what drew me to the project in the first place, and it looks mean all loaded up!

Hey there folks! It’s been forever since I’ve posted any builds here, and forever since I finished anything. I have been watching from the sidelines though and watching all the great work going on here.

To catch everyone up, at the beginning of 2023, I accepted a new position leading a flight test team on a new program which resulted in another move across the country going from Florida back to California. Once I get there I jumped right into a fast paced huge workload environment unlike anything I’d experienced before. Fortunately things have started to settle down which has given me a little bit of time to get the model desk back up and I’ve got a chance to start tinkering again. I’ve been working away on a new project and started pulling out some of the builds that got moved in an “almost done” state. Enter the Yak-130. This build was by far the closest to complete. So I unpacked the plane from its shipping container to figure out what was left.

Once it was out of its packaging we got down to business. I only had to finish up the canopy. I masked and painted the canopy, added the det cord which came from the Quinta cockpit set and then glued the canopy in the open position with a combination of fast setting Tamiya extra thin and a few daps of CA glue. There is supposed to be a brace that connects between the open canopy and the forward canopy, but I struggled to get it attached until finally the carpet monster ate it. So I’ll just leave it alone. I forgot to take any pictures along the way so I’ll leave it with the final photos.

And there you have it, got one completed. I did run into some issues with the nose landing gear as I was trying to get this assembled. The nose gear is a complex mechanism that is well represented in the kit, but it is not very stable or strong. I’m not sure if it was required but I had added weight to the nose, and I don’t think the nose gear will be able to support that weight long term. I’ll support it on a piece of foam to protect the nose gear assembly.

In summary, this kit was a real struggle to get together and that continued right to the end. It is probably not going to ever enter a show, but its in the display case and doesn’t look too bad in the end.

Thanks for looking in – hopefully I won’t wait another 2 years before I post something!
Mike
