Overall, I'd say this is one of the best you've ever done. Very rusty cables would be a big no-no, as they most likely would have had a coating of grease or lube. Cables that are rusty would bind rather than stretch as designed, causing failure. I'm not an expert on the subject, but have been around enough machines with cables to know what can happen. Maybe add a dark wash over what you have?
