M3 Lee

Ended up with the tank pushed forward more than I really wanted but, it gives me room in the rear for dudes standing around gawking.
Colors are much better now they are dried, I need to work on the ground to make it look alive. Iron work I think is up next.

The darker color heads are Hornet heads, the smaller are Alpine. The Hornet heads are way to big for these Apline bodies. Is this common or did I get a one off combination? These heads look like they could pass for 1:32

The Hornet heads are probably officers, especially Lieutenants.

Ran some numbers, being a good engineering type, based on anthropometric data for an average human male head. To our southern neighbours fair warning, we are entering the metric zone.

In 1:35 scale, the distance from the chin to the depression were the nose and browline meet:
  • 1st percentile approx 3 mm
  • 50th percentile approx 3.5 mm
  • 99th percentile approx 4 mm
In 1:35 scale, the distance between the centre of the eyes:
  • 1st percentile approx 1.6 mm
  • 50th percentile 1.8 mm
  • 99th percentile 2 mm
Measuring a collection of heads I had at hand, Alpine, Mini Art, Tamiya and Ultracast all seem to be about the 50th percentile. The Hornet and Master Box heads seem to be closer to the 99th percentile. Doing some gizintas from your photo, the numbers came out pretty close to my measurements.

I tried routing out the torso a bit to accept the larger neck. I do'nt think it's that bad.
Guess Hornet heads are meant for folks like @JamesOLeary who sculpt their own figures.
I really like the expression on this guy's face.

Then there's this guy, he looks to be leaning against something but I'll try and angle his feet a bit and make him leaning over looking down into the creek bed.

Do the heads look too big for the bodies?

Yeah! He has that "Oh Sh!t!" look doesn't he.

Seen that photo many times Rich, the second photo is flipped for some reason, look at details on the lee and you'll see it.
Thanks for the advice guys, will press on!

I think you can get away with it MP - they look OK to me.

I think I got the line up. Consulting with my modeling advisor @errains we figure if I'm going to use one Hornet head I need to use one on all the dudes.

I have a bunch of Hornet heads and, through the years, the sizes changed bigger and smaller... Sometimes I think Roger Saunders, the sculptor, had a figure for which he was making the heads and, based on that, scaled them accordingly. For example, we had different heights and weights of figures from Tamiya, Dragon, Bronco, Italeri (why update those? 🤢🤮) and others.

Taesung Harmms, Alpine sculpture, rarely did a head set that wasn't based on a figure set he made. I can only recall of one. Asian heads which he sculpted for Joe Bakanovic's Tiger Models' lines. Anyone recall that? Yes, my son calls me a 'living encyclopedia of useless information' (aka trivia)
