First Box:

Nats2013_III.jpg

Whose kits are those Russian boxes on top? I don't recognize them. I need to get me some of those Volkswagens too. (y)

The top eleven boxes are from a company called ACE. It has been around for a number of years. I have built at least 20 or more of their kits. It is owned/run by a guy named ALexei Blashcuk who is outstanding at keeping in touch and getting you missing parts or replacements when needed. He uses short run molding, so his kits can have issues with fit and gaps. However, compared to his earliest offerings, the newer model kits are far better. They definitely build into nice-looking models when done, and Alexei offers models that no one else does.

ACE is carried by many companies. I got these from Free Time Hobbies. Squadron also carries them; so does Sprue Brothers I'm told. Four of the seven Hobby Shops in my area also carry them. You can find out more info about his line of models on his website here:

ACE Models

The Volkswagens are made by Military Wheels. They also use short run molding so these little cars can be a bear to assemble at times. In fact, they are a little worse than ACE kits, but they do look good when done. Be ready for some challenging builds, but they are very rewarding when you finish!

Thanks Duke, I am familiar with Ace though I have never bought or built one of their kits so it was good to have your input. Same with Military wheels. I have built that Attack Tatra though and it is much the same. I wish I had taken the time to replace the kit supplied windshield but other than that it was a decent short run build.

Looking good! Now get that Motor Rifle platoon going man!

I've built all those myself....but in 1/72 scale, of course. All except the BTR-70. They skipped over that one in my scale for some reason...went straight to the BTR-80. Looking forward to seeing all these built.

Thanks Mark. No clue when these will be built, but they will eventually.

Probably 15 or 16 years ago I attempted the BMP-2 kit and I couldn't build it, I found it way too difficult at the time, so that's one I'm definitely going to be doing.

All of them will be built eventually, but I've got several other build that I have on a higher priority.

The new MMIR and the second edition of Abrams Squad. The Abrams Squad is a new magazine out and caters to the modern armour people. It looks very nice. Just wish I had of been faster at buying the first edition as it has some models I want to read about. I'll have to search for it. You can see whats in it here Vol 1 and Vol 2.

Its supposed to be as good or better Paul. Would be interested in your thoughts on this kit. I have the Skyraider and Ta 152 by ZM and while they look nice the plastic seems soft to me.

I have seen the finished product on the 152 and it was a real nice build from Drhornii. He also has the Skyraider and it looks just as nice as the Trumpy one but with more parts. This is just as nice as the Tamiya one but not as crisp in the molding. The only thing I don't like is the multicolored plastic but that is either seen and painted or covered up by the skin.
Ill post a better look see in a couple of days after I get a good look through the kit.

Had this gorgeous gem show up in the mail today. Super Drawings in 3D: Japanese Heavy Cruiser Tone by Kagero Publishing. Flipped through it once, and the detail it provides is just mind blowing.

Here's an example of some of the images inside the book. The whole book is like this.

This shows the aft deck of the Tone where all the transport rails for the float planes are at, and then the inclined ramp up to what was called the protective deck where the 2 plane catapults were located.

This is a stern view mid ship just behind the forward exhaust stack, showing the protective deck where the catapults are located.

And also included in the book is a double sides page w/ several detail views on the front side, including the bridge superstructure from above & below, as well as views of one of the exhaust funnels.

The back side of the page includes profile & plan views in 1/350 scale of the ship.

Picked it up from Squadron on sale for 12.50 + shipping, and from what I can tell, well worth what I paid for it. I've not looked at any of their other books, but I have to say that if anyone is interested in detailing a naval vessel, and one of these books is available for it, then absolutely get it, its well worth it.

Think I need to sell a kidney or something to get that book. Problem is only that I've already promised one away to fund the Tone and Chikuma 1/350 kits... ;)

Latest Acquisitions

Haha, I hear ya. There's no way I would have ever paid full retail for the Tone kit, but my local Hobby Town had it 50% off on clearance, and then I paid for it on Layaway and took 4 or 5 weeks to pay for it, so it cost me about 25 bucks a week, which was much easier to handle.

I've been eyeballing some of these books for awhile. Now I think I will pull the trigger and buy some. They look amazing.
