JU188 Mistel project

Considering the amount of hacking and gouging required to create the thing, I figured before I start carving up a Ju188 I'd tackle the rear end which if it screws up won't ruin a difficult to acquire kit.

This idea started out as a cheesy 'Amerika' bomber project and has evolved into an answer to the convoy escort carrier threat. The scenario that I have come to envision is for every Ju290 there would be say three of these mistels kicking about carrying a torpedo armed fw190 or Ta152, the idea being that before they are detected the fighter could sneak in just above the waves and deliver it's payload, being much smaller then a bomber making it a difficult target, and then address the ensuing fighter preferably before they managed to get airborne.

The one that I am building in 1/72 started out as a Ju388, but due to a variety of issues I've come to the conclusion a Hasegawa Ju188 would be a wiser choice, which, unfortunately is a bit out of reach at the moment.

I am experimenting with uploading from my android phone, unfortunately no joy using the gallery, so I'm trying with photobucket.

No our Gallery would not like mobile upload but doing the file attachment should work right from the forum.

Just kidding :tomato ,

Here is the 1/72 version I've been working on here and there.

The problem with using old MPM stuff as basis for something like this is the canopy, in this case the one I tried to cut out shattered more or less. I could probably make a mold and smash a new one but in the end I think I'd rather just find a Hasegawa Ju188 and go from there. But, on the other hand, if anyone wants to have a go at making a set I'll be more then happy to send the remaining one, which is yellowed by the way, and take a copy of the new one.
:D :drinks

Just for a bit of fun I decided to lay down some paint, this is the scheme I'm going for, RLM 81 over 76, which is the same as the one on the the ju388. The idea being that as the 188's were being phased out in favour of the 388, a few were diverted, revamped and stretched out.

A bit bland though I think I might jazz it up a bit with some field applied paint work after the decals are on. I did apply one swastika from a super scale sheet but I wasn't happy with it as it looked a bit anorexic and I realized I should have used a wider white outline, but when I tried to remove it with tape I took some paint with it :facepalm , oh well let it all cure, sand it down and try try again :D :drinks
