Hi everybody,
Took a little trip last sunday to the German bunker at the abbey Lilbosch near the little town PEY.[NL]
Just 10 minutes by car from my home.
The bunker is situated on the terrain from abbey LILBOSCH and the monks open this bunker every first sunday of the month in summer time. This was the last sunday this year they opened it for public.
Here is one of the doors of the gas-proof bunker. The bunker is a Luftschutzbunker[airraidbunker] and was used by basicly, German soldiers, who came to a kind of ressort on leave on the abbey's terrain and German children from German cities evacuated because of the allied bombingraids who stayed at the college on the abbey.
The inside of the bunker is no-good for claustrofobic people!
Just outside the bunker there is a monument for the MANY allied aircrews shot down by either FLAK or fighterplanes.
The allied bombers navigated on route to the German cities at a remarkable curve in the river MAAS[MEUSE] at nearby LINNE.
The Germans knew this,so this area was 'heavy'on FLAK guns.
Here is the major entrance to the bunker, the bunker was covered with soil and trees to make it hard to see especially by aircraft.
The sign says;GETTHEF...OUTOFHERE if your not allowed to come in!
[the sign is post-war]
The door is NOT original,it's there to keep vandals out.
Here is the plan of the bunker.
Anyone need reference on rusty bunker doors?
As mentioned, many allied aircrew were shot down in this area.
Here are some ,the aircraft they flew is mentioned at the picture.
As glad I am that Germany didn't win the war,I do not hate the Germans.[But you should sometimes hear the older generations!]
So to celebrate my friendship with them....I often go across the nearby German border to have a nice 'European meal'[got to love German buffets with Rumpsteak,Sauerbraten,Goulash,Wildragout,Schnitsel, Rosenkohl,Pommes,Pilzen......and so on and so on]
That's it for now....
Greetings,Ron.
