German bunker 'Pey'

Hi everybody,

Took a little trip last sunday to the German bunker at the abbey Lilbosch near the little town PEY.[NL]
Just 10 minutes by car from my home.
The bunker is situated on the terrain from abbey LILBOSCH and the monks open this bunker every first sunday of the month in summer time. This was the last sunday this year they opened it for public.

Here is one of the doors of the gas-proof bunker. The bunker is a Luftschutzbunker[airraidbunker] and was used by basicly, German soldiers, who came to a kind of ressort on leave on the abbey's terrain and German children from German cities evacuated because of the allied bombingraids who stayed at the college on the abbey.

The inside of the bunker is no-good for claustrofobic people!

Just outside the bunker there is a monument for the MANY allied aircrews shot down by either FLAK or fighterplanes.
The allied bombers navigated on route to the German cities at a remarkable curve in the river MAAS[MEUSE] at nearby LINNE.
The Germans knew this,so this area was 'heavy'on FLAK guns.

Here is the major entrance to the bunker, the bunker was covered with soil and trees to make it hard to see especially by aircraft.

The sign says;GETTHEF...OUTOFHERE if your not allowed to come in! :D [the sign is post-war]
The door is NOT original,it's there to keep vandals out.

Here is the plan of the bunker.

Anyone need reference on rusty bunker doors?

As mentioned, many allied aircrew were shot down in this area.
Here are some ,the aircraft they flew is mentioned at the picture.

As glad I am that Germany didn't win the war,I do not hate the Germans.[But you should sometimes hear the older generations!]
So to celebrate my friendship with them....I often go across the nearby German border to have a nice 'European meal'[got to love German buffets with Rumpsteak,Sauerbraten,Goulash,Wildragout,Schnitsel, Rosenkohl,Pommes,Pilzen......and so on and so on] :D

That's it for now....
Greetings,Ron.

Outstanding post Ron! Thank you for taking the time to take the pictures and share with us. I could not take the cramp quarters of those bunkers, I would be bonkers!

The older generations, yeah, same here. Around here it's more the Jap thing than the Germans. My Mother told me she remembers well the German POWs that were brought into town to go to church on sundays and they always seem to have a nice smile for her, she would have been about 10 or so. They worked in the pine forest around here cutting trees for the war effort. Our local airbase (once called Coronaca (Corn Acre) Army Airfield back then) was where they were housed and that facility became the county farm.

Anywho...I remember my elder aunt talking about the Japanese guys from Fuji coming in and how she didn't trust them. I told her that they are only making disposable cameras that there's nothing to worry about! But you know how they can be...

Anyway...Thanks again, great post!

Oh,yeah....almost forgot about this;

Here is a little quiz....WHO KNOWS THE ANSWER! :D
Nothing to win here.....just ETERNAL FAME!!!!

WHY DOES THE BUNKER DOOR HAVE BARS?!?...here is a little clue.. B) :pilot B)

Remember folks;nothing to win here....just ETERNAL FAME!!!!

Greetings,Ron.

they have bats (vleermuizen) living there?
Some of the bunkers in Raversijde was closed because of this reason, so with the bars they can fly in and out as they want, just my guess :)

YES....ETERNAL FAME for Mats!!![Sorry Bob,Mats was first] :D

Many closed bunkers are used by the 'creatures of the night' nowadays.
So even when the door is closed, the bats can get in,by flying through the bar openings. B) :pilot B)

@Joe;I think I would also get a bit homesick,if I could not eat that jummy German food anymore! :woohoo:
Christian[Phantom II] ones told me,fine European food is something he really misses in the States!

Greetings,Ron.

Every morningwhen i go to work i pass a bunker in a field next the road, would be interesting to see it inside but it's on private ground and i don't know the people there.... guess i have to continue looking at a distance :( it looks like a machinegun bunker, it has some kind of camo on the top part.
Go to google and see if i find something :)
thanks Ron for the eternal fame!! (y)

Here is a pic (the one i see looks a little smaller but hard to tell from that distance)
