CRITIQUE OR RIVET COUNTING? AN EDITORIAL

The point is nearly all of us came here for the same reason, we were sick of the infighting on the other sites so from day one we were united in a cause. Lets just say we were all experienced in what works and what doesn’t on a successful modelling site so A/ we all know the early warning signs and what to look out for in the event of possible trouble and B/ We have enough respect for each other having suffered at the hands of fools ourselves not be one of those fools here.
I like to think we have the cream of most sites gathered here without the trolls :)

JackPot!

As the new guy in town, literally five years ago, I attended some meetings and shows meeting local modellers. All went well until a friend realized his life's ambition to open a hobby shop. He had been maligned by the "clique" for years. It seems anyone who remained his friend, and patronized his shop, was the enemy and no longer welcome. The last show was not well attended, and had few vendors as a result of these dwindling numbers. Well my friend passed away recently, his wife sold the business, and peace once again falls over the Las Vegas valley. I will never again attend a local meeting, or a show.

After reading all these comments, It is really clear why we have the site that we have. Everybody seems to "get it".

Isn't it amazing how so many people at so many sites don't?

Bob

Yes we are all such nice people, we could make a campfire and sing Kumbaya together :woohoo:

Just kidding, atmosphere IS relaxed here, and if you want some hints or tips, you get them, but in a friendly way.

Way to go !

Getting some critique on our builds CAN be a good thing, much depends on who is giving the critique. For example, on another modeling site there is a person who never actually builds models but does do video in-box kit reviews and has given some advice on airbrushes and paints...sounds harmless enough but it could be a problem if some newby does not realize the advice they are reading is coming from someone that sounds like like an expert but has little or no experience building or painting models. Getting some critique from a fake ''expert'' could be worse than no critique at all because it could effect someone elses build much later on if they stumble onto that thread and cause an error to be made on the model that person is building.
In years past I have seen this sort of thing happen before a few times on other sites and in one instance it resulted in a flame war that ended up with the entire thread being deleted.
I don't see this sort of thing happening here with the current members but you never know when a troll might sneak past the guard dog?

Hi Matrixone,

I dont think you have to worry about a troll sneaking in as an "expert"
All experts around here are confirmed and recommended by Bob Letterman himself or web-staff, and have built and published quite a lot.

Cant go wrong, the masters here ARE masters, no doubt :notworthy

We are in full agreement except your last sentence. You forget that we have Moon Puppy on guard dog duty here. Nothing gets past our beagle! :yipee Is Moon Puppy a Beagle? Whatever!

Willem,

Sorry, I don't have anything to do with that area. Hell, I just build stuff! Moon Puppy and the other moderators take care of the enforcement end and, believe me, they are qualified! I do make a recommendation from time to time, but those other guys carry the load! Too many to name.

No Bob I think he is a fearsome.....fearless....horrifying....Just an all around good bloke

Re: CRITIQUE OR RIVET COUNTING? AND EDITORIAL

Truth be told, Ken Abrams has (had?) a signature which I loved along the lines of "Build how you like, Like how you build"

Regards,

Yeah, it might have gotten bumped when I changed to the current signature but I still feel that way and always will.

I have an all out love affair with every nut and bolt of the Allied half track. I've crawled on many, laid under even more, drawn stuff... photographed stuff... and still spend countless dollars on original period photos every chance I get. So in that respect, I'm a rivet counter, accuracy hound... (insert catch phrase of the day here)

I also love the artistic, fictional, fun side of modeling. In fact, the November issue of MMI has my GAZ AAA on it and it couldn't be much farther from accurate. It has a laminated windshield and tempered side-lite, (the Russians didn't have safety glass in those) a 40mm Bofors in the bed that not only never was supplied to the Russians but would most likely flip the truck on it's side... I can't even be sure I got the eastern front snow correctly. ;)

So I enjoy both sides equally, depending on what I am doing. Far be it from me to tell you how to model the kit you spent your money on and time assembling... unless you ask that is. I don't really care what others do with their time, especially if it's nothing more than nit picking silly stuff on various forums for their own enjoyment and self fulfillment. Constructive words are perfectly fine and can be very helpful. Arrogant, boastful, posturing is about as useful to me as a toothache.

So yeah, build how you like, like how you build... I'm gonna do the same. :v

I thought of issuing a warning on this earlier today...if anyone starts singing I'm shutting the site down! :rotf That includes the Coke song!
