CRITIQUE OR RIVET COUNTING? AN EDITORIAL

Status
Not open for further replies.
I like to build almost exclusively in 1/72 scale out of the box so most rivet counters don't consider me a serious modeller and usually won't lower themselves to comment on my builds. I come to the forums because I like to look at what other people have built and to get ideas/tips to improve my own models. I try to return the favor and if someone wants to lay it thick on me for an inaccurate build that's their time and energy wasted. Don't bother me any! :snoopy

Re: CRITIQUE OR RIVET COUNTING? AND EDITORIAL

Come on Saul, I doubt you fit that category as Psycho rivet counter that's for SA Dave.
Terry I know what you mean about those other forums and I have to agree with you there. I was searching for some info on the F8J and VF 111 only to be sarcastically told that they didn't fly J models at all and that he thought the J well was less than desirable. :vmad Well I am old enough to have pretty thick skin but still I wonder what license they have to be so judgmental. :idonno

Any way, Ill just say it is an E model and put the sharks mouth on it just to spite him. :D

I might have the Zotz decals to do a French FN 8 is you want.

I think we all enjoy others opinions as long as they are the same as ours :) I don't have much interest in rivet counters. I don't build for rivet counters so i don't have a lot of interest in their opinion. I build whatever i fancy that week and while i do visual research for colours and general detail it would be imposable to have rivet counter knowledge for every motorcycle, race car, Aeroplane or tank i wanted to build unless i wanted to change my hobby from building to researching. It seems daft to me to impose those sort of limitations on what you feel comfortable building before you start. i think its important to build to please your own eye first and foremost, if others like it too then its a bonus. Sometimes you see builds where someone has has completely altered the profile of a kit because its not quite corresct !! each to their own i say but to me they have completely missed the point
Would i tell them ? No. the reason is i would never be so presumptuous to put myself in a position of claiming to know better or do better than anyone else, its not for me to cast judgement on someone else's best efforts. There is one build on this site at the moment that i think is a massive fail !! ;)
would i tell the builder ?? absolutely not !! whether we like it or not we all have to exercise discretion :)....We cant really say that build is awful any more than we can say your wife is ugly (y) Beauty is in the eye of the beholder be it the Mrs or a ME109 :)

1/32 Saul. VF-111 Sundowners off the big "O"

Sorry Paul, my stash is limited to 48th & 72nd (the 32nd scale jet phenomena was new when I was buying all the decal sheets).

Thanks James but I am set on the Sundowners livery.

No sweat Saul, Ill come up with something

This is the cheapest I have found, $22.95USD, for the Zotz decals with free shipping:

I wasn't going to chime in here but what the hey, I generally don't feel qualified to judge others on accuracy issues unless its very blatant and aircraft related. I would rather help someone avoid making a mistake rather than telling them afterwards. I have no clue on armor or most other subjects. If I like a build I say so. I also tend to be my own worst critic so it's unlikely anyone is going to point out a wart I don't already know exists. I also have so many different kits that I want to build it is an extremely rare case that I will ever build a second one of anything. So telling me that I used the wrong interior color on my Fritz Fr 357K won't be helpful to me because A) I'm not going to tear it apart and redo it and B) I'm not likely to every build another. That said I'm not going to go pout if you do tell me so feel free to let me have it. I sometimes find it interesting that people don't point out issues that I know are wrong. I made an error decaling the Wellington I did last year that to me was quite noticeable but no one here made mention of it. Whether they did and were just being polite, I don't know. Even if they had, I wasn't about to try to fix it as I would only end up causing more damage. Anyway, that's my 2¢ worth.

Feel free to criticize if you wish ! ;)

Another great discussion Terry !
I say no taboos on an grown-up forum.

Most things are pointed out so far.

Best suiting for me was Moonpuppy's:
Tell me how I can do a better life-alike build without the rivet counting, because I am still learning.

And comments are sometimes necessary on really blatant build-errors like 1 inch gaps everywhere :eek:hmy:
But do it constructive and with respect to the builder, he did the best he can so far.

My 2 cents, Willem

This i had as a motto for long time now.

If you can't learn to do anything good, learn to enjoy doing it poorly! :D

At the local modelclub i got comments on my Sci fi robot, it was not constructed correct!
The guns would be to heavy and it was vulnerable to artillery fire..... :coolio

well hello, it never existed!! it's fantasy, and i love it when they try to find misstakes on something that comes from my imagination hahaha

Yeah I get that kind of stuff too. Just tell them the gun mount has a gravity dampening system and watch their faces. I'm suprised someone didn't say "is that the right color for that" :rotf

If somebody wants some useful critique of their builds they should ask for it in their post, otherwise mentioning a flaw could easily be taken the wrong way if you don't know the person very well or their skill level.

I have a buddy that heard that said about a dinosaur. I think the response was "Really, you've seen this dinosaur in person?"

I think what Saul said hit the nail on the head, "I try to only offer constructive advice." I don't pretend to be an expert modeler. I make mistakes. I use these forums to learn how other modelers are tackling the same problems and then I practice and build, build, build. We all started out the same and learned how to be better. I really appreciate the help, suggestions and advice given.

To quote "I build what I like, and like what I build". That said, I appreciate when someone more knowledgeable on my subject chimes in. I tossed out a build idea on another forum and received three "That was never built"s, two it will be nearly impossible to accurately represent that"s and one guy PM'd me with advice. The PM said, "Just remember, they used the straight return roller arms on those. I'll check my stash if you don't have them." Guess who I listened to?

There are rivet counters and artists, I straddle the line, especially with color. If I were to describe a vehicle from my days in the Corps, all I could say was "It's green" (2points for naming the reference :woohoo:)

We aren't a sugar coated group of kittens and sunshine, just civil, understanding adults with a common goal. That goal is to buy every darn kit we can!

I don't know enough to hand out tip's or subject knowledge but will always listen to those who do.
But I have found quite a few who think it's their god given right to strip apart a build rather than give helpfull info.
Unfortunatly when I first started I joined a forum that's run in my home country and even found a few of the member's in my area.Unless I built or flew commercial planes and only built Australian subject's I would hardly get a comment that was positive.
If it wasen't for the fact that I found my old TnT log in(that is now this site)I was through with forum's.

I do want to build my model's as close to the real thing with the right colour and shape, but if it aint quite right I don't mind as long as I'am happy with it.And if a fellow plastic jocky has some advice please give it,but speak from your head not from your ass.
