Colossus-Building the Bismarck-Trumpeter 1/200th

Excellent technique that would work to make your bow wave .

1.5 meters is 59 US inches. That is one inch short of 6ft. By comparison, I am 5 inches/12.7 shorter than the completed kit!

Hey Laurence...

First up- welcome back!

I know I'm a couple years late to this party but I've been hit and miss with ships ;). I saw you mention in your other thread about the Bismark and just finished an excellent book Osprey sent me to review...called Hunt the Bismark. It's not the best photo reference book, but the narrative of the period of Bismark's construction up through it's battle with the Royal Navy was captivating...I couldn't put it down. The first photo shows her dead on and she looks MASSIVE! You've got a new follower now!!

Just finished the book review if you want a look Laurence...

Thanks for the kind words and the info provided.

I did do my research (still ongoing) and found many photos of the Bismarck. One interesting fact was that, according to an interview with one of the survivors, the ship was not referred to as a "she" but rather as a "he", due to the sheer size and the name.

The model is 1.2m long (4ft), the diorama will be longer. Hope to resume work on it as soon as possible, but at this stage I am not sure when.

Thanks,

Laurence

This is quite right Laurence. Ship in German is neutral (Das Schiff), but both the Bismarck and the Tirpitz were referred to as "Der" (masculine). A matter of false pride perhaps?

Cheers

Alex

Hey Alex,

I don't think it was false pride at all, they had every reason to be proud of those big ships.

I found something I could work on, and that's the seaplanes, nice and small, perfect under the circumstances.

This is one of them (four in total), will be showing it ready to fly, and I am thinking of showing one with the wings folded.

There is a ton of PE on this one, the whole cockpit is PE, the canopy, machine gun and few other things.

Photo isn't that great, but working on setting up a small corner where I could take decent photos.

That is really great Laurence, awesome Job.

Indeed there is a lot of pride about those ships, albeit it cannot be overly expressed. In Hamburg there is an Exposition in the Maritime Museum of the accomplishments of the Yards and a big part thereof is the Bismarck. Very interesting: https://www.imm-hamburg.de/

Looking Forward to more of your great Job.

Cheers

Wow Laurence the quality of the AR 196 is awesome considering the small size .

Well, back to Bismarck ladies and gentlemen, it's been too long since I have actually dome something on this project.

I have decided to tackle the life boats ... could have chosen something easier to start with :bang head but it has to be done regardless.

The little guy up there, in the image is one of the four 11 metres launches. PE galore, the kit has a very very basic plastic part. What shows in the photo is a combo of 8 PE pieces, with 5 still to be put in place. That does not include the hull, prop and rudder.

On top of that, we also have to do admiral's gig, captain's gig, some other boats with oars, an unspecified amount of rafts, usually stacked up in special places along the decks or wherever the smart designers chose to place them. The rafts do not have any PE I could identify, but all boats do, if you want to go nuts and I do.

More to come, hope to have weekly updates if possible, full steam ahead on this project. :captain

Thanks for looking,

Laurence
