BATTLE BLOG # 1 - THE LAST TIGER / BERLIN '45

[sup]CHASSIS STUFF - now where gettin' tuff[/sup]

Thanks for following everyone and appreciate the encouragement from you all
. (y)

The chassis could be identified , like turret, by finding unchangeable features first then working out from there.
1. The chassis has the extended hull side plates from Dec 1942-January 1944 - these are welded-on at the factory so should be a stable detail.
2. [I think]that there are the K.F.F.2 Drivers forward periscope holes plugged and welded [Feb 1943- June '43]. There were a number of hulls that were pre-drilled with these holes and these hulls showed the holes plugged until the chassis ran out.
3.Toggle bolts for the MG cover still present [deleted by June production.

4.Hull side tow cable mounts match configuration for January 1943 - these are welded-on at the factory so should be a stable detail.

5. No Zimmerit or sign of previous zimmerit.

6. Rear plate seems to be the 3rd configuration from spring 1943. The left rear has the toolbox mounting frame that was used from Dec '42 - Oct '43.
7. Welded rear mudguard frame -deleted after May '43.

Other details that are displayed by this vehicle that can be changed or upgraded, so are then not definitive for factory variant recognition from the limited photo information/angle and muddy the waters somewhat..
- Single Rightside headlight[deleted August '43]
- side muguards with Triangular ends [Jan '43]
- Front drive sprocket centre hub machined flat [April '43]
- Rounded style tow shackles [Dec '43]
- late model Track links with ice chevrons [Oct '43].

My call is that this is a March to June '43 Hull. which will then guide me as to the tool mountings and rear engine deck details.

:) Thank you guys and please keep watching so that I keep going. :coolio

Ok back to the Chassis - still working on all the mods.
Some progress made but only slowly.

I'm seeing shrapnel hits in the wheels on the ref photo, so I turned my dremmel their way as they screamed for mercy, ha,ha,hah!

Funny, you use the dremel and it looks like battle damage. I use it and it looks like I don't know how to drill... :idonno

MORE CHASSIS UPDATES

- Worked on the mudguards thinning them out from the underside to make them look more like sheet metal.
- created the damaged mudguard on the right side using the same techniques as the stowage bin.

SO OVERALL IS NOW LOOKING LIKE THIS
- to sex it up even more I will be leaving off the left side engine deck fan housing cover - you can't see from the photos but I thought it would be a nice touch for a 'Frankenstein Tiger 1 - "no time to find and fit that new cover just send her in as she will only last a day if that".

:rotf :rotf I also notice that one of the exhaust caps is opened while the other is closed . Is that the way they come or is it a mod ?

Cheers, Christian B)

Hi Christian, :Hiay
yeah that's a bit of a mod - I wanted it to appear to be in the jammed open state from heat and rust, keeping in the mood of the whole vehicle being a old soldier sent in for final battle. The kit allows you either position if you choose to use the older sprue included in the kit instead of the recommended newer moldings.
Just wait for the wheels, they ended -up being quite a task matching the missing ones in the photos and finishing off the damage - next post.
