Base Ground Work

I have a wood base. Need some ground work on it. My past experience with Celuclay turned out not so good as it started turning up on end and didn't adhere to the surface that well, think it was suggested I need to add white glue to the mix, but I don't have any white glue.

The base I have has been stained and a couple of coats of polyurethane on it. I have on hand Vallejo Sandy paste, Liqutek Modeling stuff, the thick stuff, will get exact name if needed. And I got dry wall speckling.

What I want is a grassy field (for the Fokkin Eindecker. :pilot )

What would you use?

For grass it mustn´t be so thick so i think the sandy paste could work, just give it a dark brown spray after it´s dry and then some static grass on top

I would use this and just trim it.

Everything I have read and seen shows the fields to be rough and not manicured. This stuff would give you the look and would only need to be trimmed a bit so it doesnt look wild. Give Dave a shout at http:/lastcavelry.com as he sells Fredericus Max stuff. He might be able to get the mat for you. If you go this way ask him to get a few sheets in and I'll buy some too.

Sounds good Mats, thanks. I still got some of Ant's Treemendous stuff, a lot of it actually. I can make it look interesting.

James that looks really good but I'm shooting to get this done this weekend, only one more day left of vacation. When I save up some lunch money we'll go in together and get some from Dave. (y)

I used Celluclay and I did add some white glue / water mix 50-50. Worked a treat.

As for the static grass I used the 4mm length one, a two colour mix. All I needed to know about it had been posted by Bob in his Sayonara thread.

All out of White Glue Laurence. Trying to work with what I have. Took inventory this evening when I went to the garage. liquitex sculpting paste, Sand paste, Vallejo Sand Paste (which is better than liqutex imho) and some drywall speckling. Think I'll go with the Vallejo Sand Paste (used it before with no issues so far on the Honey) and will add some grass and scatter from Ant's kit from a while back.

I'll bet ya the nearest 24 hr gas station sells white glue... :pp

I like the texture of celluclay, but after mixing, (with glue) squeeze as much of the water out of it
as you can...this helps keep it from shrinking and curling up around the edges.

I"m trying not to leave the house unless I have to Tom :smack

Last day of vacation, where did it go!?

Pup , if you're gonna use dry wall mud use the blue container not the green .
The blue shrinks less and is easier to sand .
Using green on thicker larger areas will crack , the blue will not .
I always use some netting or dry wall tape anyway between layers , it'll never crack .
I use sheetrock mud for all my base layers and then build up on that . Never use clays or other media .

I don't know if it's blue or green...it's a cardboard box...I'll take a look at it when I go to the garage. Netting, you talking about like what you use to build up over a hole?

Yup , I'm also talkin bout pre mixed mud in a plastic tub container , forgot to say it's also light weight .
I use old pieces of window screen , holed sheet rock seam tape etc.

Got it...rather I ain't got it, not the same stuff. I got a dry mix. Just add water. I'm going to the drug store to get some damn white glue... :stinker

Bob, I use wall spackle mixed with white glue to avoid shrinkage and also makes the spackle rock hard when dry

I usually get the pink stuff from Home depot, works for me

dollop it on spread it about, let it dry a tiny bit sweep up some sand from the driveway and or kerb sprinkle it on put it down add grass and push that down and voila

I hear that, since I started working from home I only leave the house when it's
absolutely necessary...it's getting a little creepy.

Is the wood base sealed with anything? If so, you may want to sand it with some coarse
sandpaper.

What I've done is mix the Celluclay with water, squeeze as much water out of it as you can,
then add the glue.

Apply thin, just for texture, maybe even apply a thin layer of white glue where
you are going to be putting it. If you try to build it up a mound or hill, it will
probably shrink and not work too good.

Good luck!

My lovely bride just came home with some glue and I got a couple of steaks on the counter. Gonna give it a shot this evening. Thanks guys. (y)

Sounds good to me, Moon! Tom- I feel the same way about leaving the house nowadays- but when I do it's kinda fun.

Now, I have been looking for a nice grassmat as a base for the IAR- but it needs to be short and irregular. Any suggestions? The stuff I find that looks decent is always out of stock. Thanks!

Hey Chuk, what say we start a club..."The League of Extraordinary Shut-Ins".

Have you checked Scenic Express?

I might be getting some of this, far less messy than the Celuclay.

Here's the result, whacha'll think? The Fokker decal is not fixed yet, just placing there to test size.
