All Righty ... What's on the bench today?

You may have read in my F-4C thread that my favourite airbrush has died so I'm waiting on another coming from the UK. In the meantime...

Ian.

My birthday was in July and i got some WW1 aircraft kits as presents.

Time to start Fokkering around here.

This is the Revell 1/28 scale Fokker Dr.1 Triplane kit. It's a decent size kit in 1/28 scale and it's an oldie too. At least the molds are old = 1957 copyright date inside the fuselage.

Seeing as the model is a pretty big size and seeing as the actual engine in the aircraft was a rotary one (not a radial engine as some mistakenly think) i decided to add an electric motor to mine. So far i have the kit engine built and modified to mount onto the electric motor.

I've also assembled the cockpit. Note the 1957 copyright date.

This is one of four WW1 aircraft kits i got for my birthday. I'm hoping to track down a Revell 1/28 scale Sopwith Camel in the near future.

There are few dfifferences between the Dr.1 and the prototype Fokker F1 that Werner Voss and Richtofen flew earlier. Most notable is the absence of the wingtip skids. I'm seriously thinking of painting this model to represent Werner Voss' Fokker F1 as I've always admire Voss' last fight and the face he'd painted on the front of his engine cowling.. The man was a superb pilot.

Cheers

Well Happy Birthday ... will be watching this project as Animation is the Bomb ... I hope the prop doesn't spin too fast ... I have the Camel .... top shelf ... might get back on it ... :pilot

Nice work on that Camo Mike ... Chris ... nice work ... And James ... Lookin Good (y)

My project ( Commission Build ) is coming right along I have one side of the Tower finished ...

Working with wood is a pain ... but the results are worth it ...

This side needs cross bracing at the top ... I added a lift pipe inside frost Box and decided to open the model up some ... curiosity is bad when you try to figure what's inside the box ... so now you see it ... I'll add a small heater when I find one ... :eek:ldguy

Help a fellow out a bit . Tower of doom ? Tower of shame ? Tower of London ?

Looks good whatever it is (y) Cheers, Christian B)

Ok ... its a $60.00 kit for a On30 module we'll be taking to the Plano/Ft. Worth Train Show ...

It's a Branch line Water Tower ... the base was easy ... the tank has Truss rods that will need cutting on painting ... I'm glad I read the instructions, about putting the bolts on inside wood 1st ... as drilling inside the tower would be very hard ... :woohoo:

Does this have a set of plans that you can copy?

Well, cool a water tower . My first time seeing a square one.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad still has a working tower but it is round.

Beautiful ride :D

I am definitely going to do this aircraft as if it were Werner Voss' Fokker F1 (prototype of the Dr.1). I've figured out a way to wire the motor so that the batteries will be outside the model. There is an 'X' bracing wire coming from the bottom of the firewall andto either landing gear leg. Those wires will be the wires from the motor. I'll run them into the wheel covers and then cut a small grove in the side of the tire and run the wires out there and down inrto and under the display base. I'll post images when I do that.

I'm going to get a 1/28 Sopwith Camel and swipe the engine from that since the Fokker F1 triplane flown by Voss had a Le Rhone rotary engine in it. The Oberusal was a copy of the Le Rhone but the engine in the Fokker Triplane kit has the rods and the exhausts on the rear of the engine not the front as they were on the Le Rhone.

Cheers

Ian.

Looks like the cockpit from a 1/48 Monogram F9F Panther.

And tonights winner is...
Yep it's the Panther but the Revell 2004 re-tool so it's the F9F-5P version.

More soon.

Ian.

Edit:
Just realised that this qualifies for the Naval Aircraft Campaign !! :facepalm

More work on my Fokker Dr.1 to Fokker F.1 conversion.

Okay there folks. Today I'm picking up another Revell 1/28 scale Fokker Dr.1 triplane. Why? I need to do a major conversion to the engine to make it look like the one in Werner Voss' F.1 triplane. Also the actaul plane that Revell based its model on had an early aileron on the right top wing and a late one on the left top wing. Fortunately these parts are basically perfectly flat so it'll be an easy matter to cut one off the new kit and put it on Voss' plane and outthe late style one on the new kit and then build the new kit as the Red baron's final plane. Voss and Manfred von Richtofen were both given F.1 prototype Fokkers andthe Red baron later got a Dr.1 plane.

Here're thre images showing the wing and ailerons. Not the difference on the ailerons closet to the wing center.

Wing.

Left aileron.

Right aileron.

I was lucky enought to find an image of a long OOP resin F.1 conversion kit that showed the horizontal tailplane from straight overhead. I save that image and then using Irfanview 32 I rotated the image 90 degrees and enlarged it by clicking the Irfanview + icon 4 times. Most fortunately that gave me the exact size image I needed in order to make the conversion to the leading edge of the kit tailplane. rather than going to all the trouble of making a new tailplane i simply traced the image on my laptop screen and used it as a template to sand the convex curve onto the leading edge of the kit tailplane. Here's an image of the modified kit tailplane. note the convex curve on the leading edges of the tailplane.

The modifications to the engine will consist of moving the copper coloured exhaust pipes to the front of the engine cylinders and then adding new thin piano wire control rods to the front ofthe engine too. I'll post images of those when done. the engine i showed earlier in my build will go in the new kit as this engine is the one used in the Dr.1 the Red Baron flew.

The idea of using the Revell 1/28 scale Sopwith Camel engine in my F.1 Voss' triplane fell through when I discovered it's Le Clerget engine not a Le Rhone.

Cheers

p.s. Should I start a step by step of this on the orther sub-forum devoted to ircraft?

I can see the difference in the ailerons now, why would they have done that? Could it be the refreance aircraft they were looking at had the two different styles on it?

Peter yes you probably should start a dedicated thread, I'll be watching. :popcorn
