All Righty ... What's on the bench today?

Painting just the camo on this Airfix Lancaster for my good friend, Zac Yates. His fiancee's great Uncle was shot-down in April '44 over Aarchen on the way back from a raid and spent the next year as a PoW.

Zac is an enthusiastic modeller but doesn't own an airbrush, he asked me to just paint the camo - really difficult to limit m'self, but I need to be mindful that this is HIS project not mine - It's a superb model, it has to be said and really has a LOT of presence. One of the 'triggers' for my proposing the Bomber Campaign II for next year.

Chuk .... I hope you have a safe move and you get settled in to your new Digs soon ... I hope unpacking the bench leaves you inspired to get some of your amazing work on it ... :salute

Ian that Lancaster kit is looking very nice ... very nice bird on the wings ... :popcorn

That's always tough to do, Kenny- :(

On my bench? Nothing! It's all packed up- along all the other extraneous stuff in the house to make it ready for sale. That boulder is almost pushed to the top of the mountain- the realtor open house is Thursday, and the general open house is Sunday. We hope to sell in a week- our market is hawt! Then, it's off to Whidbey Island in Washington!

Too cool Chuk....is this for a job or change of pace? And tell us about the island- it looks very nice- is it isolated far from the mainland? I'm checking it out now as I've always wanted to head off somewhere like that instead of being stuck in the middle of the state like I am....

Aw man, you're leaving Chuck? NO! Damn, I've always been thrilled to meet you at TVMC and Valleycon and other places! We never get to spend enough time together! Crap! Everyone is leaving me behind....

I hope you have a great move Chuck and have fun up there. Hopefully we'll catch up a\t another Comicon someday...

As for what's on my bench....

Not much anymore. I spent a day or so just clearing it off in an attempt to try and organize it. I am stunned at the amount of stuff that came off that place; and I'm not done yet!

Here it is almost all cleared off:

20115_Workbench_I.jpg

You can still see some of the things I hadn't removed just yet. Now for the things I had removed....

I'll start with the Works in Progress and Shelf Queens that have graced this bench for more than a year:

20115_Workbench_II.jpg

About half of them cannot be finished due to lack of parts and stuff. These also don't include my three larger projects that are sitting on my spraybooth for lack of a better place to put them.

But there's more....

Here's the tray of small sprues and decal sheets that I removed as well. None of these (so far) are parts to complete the Shelf Queens you saw above:

20115_Workbench_III.jpg

Now for more parts; this time they are dio parts, accessory parts and other parts not attached to sprues for the most part. I left a tube of glue in the pic so you could see how big this bowl is:

20115_Workbench_IV.jpg

Again, none of them (so far) will allow me to complete any Shelf Queens.

Amazed yet? Wait till you see this....

These are all the paints and spray bottles I pulled from the bench. The larger bottles are stacked two high:

20115_Workbench_V.jpg

I need to go through them and find out which ones are all dried up and useless and get rid of them. Then I have to figure out where to put the rest...

While pulling everything off, I found a number of things I hadn't known I had (or at least in the numbers I have them)

For instance, these three bottles of dullcoat:

20115_Workbench_VI.jpg

That'll cover a good number of small armor models...

Then there are these three bottles of airbrush thinner for my Testor's enamels:

20115_Workbench_VII.jpg

These will help immensely.

I think I'm set for glue at least; I was quite surprised at how many of these I had, and all of them are good!

20115_Workbench_VIII.jpg

And yes, I still use them quite extensively and not for sniffing! :bat

Not only that, but I was very pleasantly surprised to see I have all these... and they are all full!

20115_Workbench_IX.jpg

These also do not include all the paints, glues and accessories I have in my portable tool box that I take to Hobby Days.

Now, with all that removed from my bench (and more) I made an attempt to start organizing a little better so I could find things. Not to mention, have more room to work on things as well.

To the left of my workbench is a credenza that has three drawers. The bottom two drawers now contain my many parts boxes. Some of those boxes I need to go through and remove parts from the sprues and sort them out. That will come later. The top drawer is organized thusly:

20115_Workbench_X.jpg

The box at the bottom of the pic contains my tools: Sprue cutters, tweezers, picks, scrapers, Exacto knives, etc. The ones I use the most are on top of the purple lid. The box above it contains all my sanding sticks, sanding pads, sanding tools and files. The box above that contains miscellaneous other tools such as scissors and other tools that don't fit in the first box. The last box contains diorama base fixings and lead weights for tail-heavy aircraft.

Finally, I had a lazy Susan type thing that I combined with a desk organizer that I'd gotten from the wife. Underneath it I have all my bottles of Aqua Clear, liquid masks, decal film, washes, powders and other accessories. Above in the organizer are my paint brushes, more files and sanding sticks, some Windsor Newton oils and other accessories:

Well, that's where I am now. Still trying to find out where to put the rest and how to organize the rest. Until then, all construction has stopped.

I'll keep you posted on all that I complete later on....

LOL! I don't have a pile like that never did have. What I am slowly dealing with is finding crap that has been stored away for 10 and 20 years that I know I have "someplace". Things like a little tool for cleaning out airbrush tips. I remembered what it looked like and made one from hard brass wire (the original was steel) Then about a month later I found it back in my Tulsa storage spot. I have found quite a lot of stuff in the last 2 years. Working on getting to a point of getting rid of some of it. Like plenty of kits. Have too many and it really is time to get rid of some. Just have to take the time to do it. :idonno

I feel your pain Mark ... and I can't complain about mine anymore ... I hope you find those missing parts soon ... when your done come over & help Me find Christine's oil filter thingy so I can proceed .... :rotf ... What are you doing Mark, Preppin'? :rotf

Partly, yeah. Mostly I'm doing this because I'm just tired of all the clutter on the bench! It really drains me when I go looking for something and can't see it for all the other crap on the bench. I have seen all these other people with larger benches, and/or more space and good organization; even when dirty, and I realized what my workbench was just too messy and uncoordinated for me to get anything done quickly and well. I'm just tired of it. Now I'm going through the whole room and working on sorting things out; determining what I'm going to keep and placing everything else in it's place.

Maybe once I get the spraybooth cleaned up again; I may just shoot some paint and clearcoats in between all this just to feel like I'm making some kind of progress.

Stay tuned, more to come.

Gerry, Kenny, your benches are looking good. Keep going gentlemen, I love seeing someone making progress. Gerry, hurry up with that catfish truck; I'm getting hungry!
