1/16th scale sFH 18 Howitzer

@Sharkmouth Saúl is the only person I know that might have that kind of info.

I believe I do but am still fighting to recover a drive... 20.4 hours in and only 60% done. Plenty of bad sectors but I should be able to recover files and then, mount the bridge (that Dell forces me to use) so I can mount my drive that powers up the WSAN (to access older files and scans).

Oh crap Saúl! I am guessing it is an old platter type drive. I gave up on those when I built my 2016 machine and have not looked back. I have several large external SSD drives that I save all my important stuff to and only fire them up to access or add to the info on them. (wonderful USB 3.0) The thing about SSD drives is that if you just access the info it doesn't seem to affect it at all. From what I understand, it is the write, delete, rewrite, etc. that causes them to start failing over time.

I have a couple of ancient DEATH KNELL machines around here someplace that my brother gave me and I never have used them.

No hurry on any ammo info for the howitzer. Not sure which shells I will make masters of, but can "just" make out dimensions on most of them and then can do my drawing skills to get reasonable sizing. Biggest problem will be finding some 3/8 or 7/16 diameter acrylic rod to make the masters out of. Thing is they don't need to be super accurate, just really close which is possible with what I have. 15cm dia comes in at .369 diameter in 1/16th scale, so definitely NOT tiny by any stretch.

Good luck with the data recovery!

Actually the death knell is on an SSD which is still under warranty. The manufacturer wants me to send it back on my dime but I figured I would perform a byte-by-byte back up and try a recovery of the data. Almost thirty hours in and 14% at step two:

I have a mix of SSD and HDD, SSD for speed and HDD for file storage size.

In the meantime, @Heavens Eagle, do you know this site covering the cases?
Click on text or images for details.

Well @Heavens Eagle, I figured to grab the drive and connect it with a cable to retrieve more information:

Check your message Paul as I sent the complete file as a PDF since the text is very relevant to what you want.

@Heavens Eagle, you might have received all I have sent in the message BUT I won't know until I get to mount my drive into the new Dell. Fortunately, the bridge for the PC box to mount that drive arrived.

Now, Paul, all I have to do is wait for this to finish (which also looks like good news as Disk Drill is doing a good job of recovering bad sectors (while filling my 10TB drive almost to the limit!
Getting closer! Only 37 and a half hours in! Yes, I am a stubborn and FRUGAL old man!

I haven't kept up on PC hardware, too busy moving MAC addresses around (not 🍎 that MAC). How does a SSD get bad sectors?
No clue but perhaps it has to do with the heavy physical and software security I run on it 24/7... I tested it and the temperature shot up in about 120 seconds of boot up causing Windows to freeze. I know about what you're referring to as I use MAC (Media Access Control) address logging to preclude outsiders from my WSAN.

Am I paranoid or something?
:bang head

Just a little on the paranoid side eh what?
I simply shut down my machines and have them where I "HAVE" to manually turn them on.
Infoverload "Oh Yeah" I should be able to make a master for the cases as well. Turning the ammo masters is just a matter of drawing up which one's I want to use and adding dimensions. Then making a big mess with a lot of acrylic scrap strings and dust.

Thanks Saúl

Holy crap Saúl! I had a memory card go bad on me at one point where I couldn't write to it, but it was still readable.

What brand of drive is it? I only use Samsung drives and have had no problems with them so far. (knock wood) Have 5 drives in my machine. Two were originally set up as RAID 0 in the machine back when it was built in 2016. Decided that probably wasn't a good idea though and redid everything to regular drives after that. If the computer dies, I can still hook them up to a new machine and read them. All except the C drive are just storage anyway.

The 'Team Group' SSD was indeed my OS (C) drive, all others are regular HDD for storage. 55 hours later, Step 4, getting close....

My luck. Power 🔋 outage overnight as Windows was updating. My UPS worked as intended for 15 minutes of power before shutting down the PC. Now, it won't start. Dell phone 📱 support is having issues and hanging up on me. I feel like Rodney Dangerfield!

Going back to my days on hardware (DeVry University grad here) I got my PC back up. It is not the place for my computer issues here so I will make it relevant. There are turned 'Hummel' rounds on the way in turned metal. 3D print and files are already out there but I can't vouch for accuracy. Poles are usually good about accuracy but those print lines... UGH!

@Sharkmouth
Yeah, computer issues are a pain, and with all the Win 11 detriments and spy garbage they have built into It, I am now leaning toward moving to Linux. Am so tired of micro :poop: stuffing garbage down my throat. Lenovo has gone to Linux for their default loaded OS. If you want the Windows garbage loaded into their machine now you have to pay a bunch extra. I also hate the advertising ware that Microsoft now bundles with their OS junk.
As to the 3D printed Reskit parts, I did notice that one of the CH-54 parts showed layer lines that will have to be fixed. The other parts are pretty much smooth and will probably be no problem.

Are those ammo round parts in 1/35th or 1/16th. If I were turning rounds for the sFH18 in metal I would use aluminum. I suspect the Makera CNC machine I have coming will be able to turn these parts using the 4th axis attachment with little to no trouble. I have a big learning curve ahead of me.

They are 1/16th to match your kit. ;) For 1/35th scale, there have been MANY releases already.

I wonder if you could use the .STL files on a CNC machine?

As for the PC, I just learned about re-installing Windows 11 using Ventoy which allows one to eliminate bloatware from the install (like CoPilot, OneDrive, and all that other crap). I also like that it disables the hardware checking so I might be able to install it on my older PC whose motherboard wasn't up to snuff! Anyway, back to model building!

Yeah, they have upgraded to Win 11 at work on some micro PC's. So far I hate dealing with it. MS is also pestering me on my PC about upgrading, and that kind of stuff really needs to be shut down.

Supposedly with the software that the CNC machine is coming with, I can use STL files to generate the tool path files. It is supposed to be fairly intuitive, and straight forward. I have not bothered to spend any time on it yet.

As I do use my PC a quite fair amount to do research, drawings, postings, and other support stuff for model building, and as there is a lot of 3D modeling going on now to create STL files and 3D prints. It has become an important part of AMS modeling. So keep up with the computer stuff.

On another note, I have been working on this POS over the weekend. Discovered some more "STUPID" stuff that they did that either were NOT needed, or were not supposed to be there. Photos later.

I did find that I could fix the angle of the parts in the carriage trails that engage with the limber. Turns out they were mounted and glued and I was able to remove them. (Note to self, details do NOT need to be glued super hard on these kits).

I was able to remove the pivot mounts, clean them up and reposition them. I built up the limber and assembled the trails to the carriage with wheels and tires. Had the pivot mounts between the trails and with the built limber, I positioned them and tack glued them in place. (Yeah, I know, photos will show what I did better when I post them)

Am now thinking about fixing all the rest of the stuff and making the beast into a towed item. Fun part is that I could them display it as towed or fully set up in firing position.

Give me..
OPTIONS!!
