    Is this thing on?

I think I'm finally back. I've been getting some bench time or at least cleaning and setting it up to work. It's been a long slog, between the pandemic, my oldest graduating and getting him settled, my youngest globetrotting with school (he's living like a Bond villain for the next 2 months...

I hope to be active again...

Been a long weird stretch. Thing One graduated, but without internships or even any work history, I had my doubts about him getting a move on. But he landed a great job in a great area (walking distance to work, great restaurants, a brewery, etc). Thing Two was working on a ship during the...

    Anyone here into slot cars?

I just missed the boom as a kid. I was too young for the 1/24 racers and only had the Aurora HO set. By the time I got old enough, all the tracks in the area closed. I recently bought a vintage Aurora 1/32 set from 1965 to convert the Demolition Demon (my first model kit ever at 5 back in '70)...

    Well that sucked.

I thought I was in double secret probation. After having to reset my computer to an older OS, I lost all my saved passwords and couldn't login here. Every few days I'd try to get the change password email resent but it never came, that was if I could get past proving I wasn't a bot. Finally...

    Airbrush hijinks.

I finally gave into my latest obsession, the Paasche Turbo AB. I remember the guy at Pearl in '82 laughing at me a saying 'don't even think about it kid' when i asked about it. Who's laughing now? Theres almost no info on these, they are from the original 1850 design and have been out of...

    Tamiya keeps upping the ante.

They are knocking it out of the park with these new scanned figures. I'm hooked.

    Anyone build a Zoukei-Mura kit?

To fill out my need to build Horikoshi designs (have the Wingsy Type 96 and Tamimy Zero), I was looking at a Raiden. I came across Zoukei-Mura and was amazed at the sprue shots and reviews. I'm particularly interested in the canopy frame being separate from the glazing. I hear they are very...

The digital recasters: the death of garage kits.

This is a recast of a Jeff Yagher sculpt. They 3D scan a kit, then print out copies to sell. The difference between this and the older scum that recasted is now there is no physical store or Ebay shop that can be shut down or otherwise held accountable. It's just files emailed to anyone...

    50 cal question.

As I gather ref pics for the '17 dio, I keep coming across photos with 50s that look like the barrel is not in the cooling jacket. Any ideas?

    Opinions on grass.

I have the new 1/48 HK B-17 on order. I want to go belly landed, damaged dio. Full Shep Paine homage. When I got the Monogram version as a kid, I wanted to do that so bad, I actually spent hours with an old rusty hand saw cutting wood just to make saw dust. Imagine my reaction when I went with...

    Twelve O'Clock High.

I've been reading Masters Of the Air, a phenomenal book about the 8th Air Force. It mentions the authors of Twelve O'Clock High since they were there in the thick of it and it got me to go back and watch the film. I hadn't seen it in years, I watched it whenever it was on TV, but I remember...

A serious attempt at 1/35 faces.

No excuses anymore, I'm putting in the time to learn this. Starting with the eyes, I skipped primer and sprayed a light coat of very thin Vallejo Natural Flesh with the Iwata HP-AH, 2mm @ under 10 PSI. Next I defined the eyes with Ivory using a Series 7 000 brush. Then black for the iris...

    Now this is macro!

Got an adapter ring to mate the Rebel to the microscope. Messing around with an iris in 1/35. Still need to define the eye with an upper and lower lid, but the tough part is done.

    Finally!

I've been jonesing for a resistance solderer for a while now. I put the 1/700 Flyhawk Bismarck and 1/72 Revell Type VII back in the box because there was so much PE and I really can't get the hang of CA on it. I end up getting stuff stuck everywhere or flood it so there's visible surfaces...

    It's all about the timing.

So I decided I wanted to go back to some 1/35 sculpting, especially considering the new addition of the microscope. I've wanted to do a full 'Fury' set, really nail the characters in 1/35 since the movie came out, I guess it's time to get started. In my basement, I have two huge bins of...

Remember when the metallic pigment ruined my bench

Just in case you thought I was exaggerating the extent of the problem, that it was everywhere. I just pulled some 1/35 resin heads out to check the ear sculpts today under the scope. These were in the bottom of a small plastic drawer in a housing at the opposite end of the room. Pigment flakes.

New toy to push my over the edge.

I decided 1/35 was just too large, so I got me one of these: I admit, it's a bit insane. I got started with an easy project, like a 1/72 U boat crewman yelling 'Alarm!'. The micrometer behind it is set to 2mm. It's one of those 'take a deep breather and hold it' type of adventures. Still...

    DSPAIE nippers

I just received a pair of these. I'm pretty impressed with the presentation, the box, holster, adjustment tool, cleaning cloth, etc. It's a lot of kit for $31. I bought it from USA Gundam store, pretty big place, reviews all good. For giggles I checked their 'scratch off' individual security...

Future home of the 1/72 Type VII I'm building.

They just finished the new building at my sons school for when goes back in March. Currently, the classrooms and dorms are all in the Mansion in the background. The building between it and the ocean is the new building, each grade has their own section. So one of those wings each for 28 kids. A...
