Waldron Punch question

Hey everyone....

I went to use my punches on some of my Fokker dials and found that they have a small amount of rust starting on them...nothing too bad yet...but is there a way to keep them from getting worse? I keep them in a chest drawer in my shop that is heated by a space heater...doesn't seem moist in there, but when it's really cold, the heater really seems stretched to its limit

Remove the rust, coat them with light oil and get a desiccant pack to put in the drawer where you store them. Works for all metal tools. Wiping them after use helps too. B)

Thanks Mike...you mean like machine oil??

And where would I look for desiccant packs?? :hmmm :idonno

baby oil works too, but makes big o' fingerprints on your models. I clean mine with a surface conditioning pad, 3M 07440(?)
Dessicant packs come in prescriptions, or Micro Mark has 'em. I put them in the sealed containers my decals are in.

The internet is a mighty tool.

Wow, 5-7 cubic feet is a bit strong! Then again, it is designed for a gun case. Nice find!

I do agree about removing the rust. If it is on the shank, it won't affect punching. If on the tip, it may.

I do wipe my tools with a machine oil moistened paper towel before and after use. This does mean washing the punched disks.

The desiccant Mike posted sounds great but I have a large library and a smaller one in my workshop so I have small room dehumidifiers running.

I once, before having a son (and therefore many a chance to collect these packets from his medication), did pick this up from Amazon:

50 packets for $12USD and free shipping but you need to go to more buying options to find where to buy it directly from Silicagel Factory. There was another, in a metal enclosure which I would put in the toaster over at 280 degrees for about 2 hours to recharge it when the indicator turned green. This was kept in my Steelcase desk's drawers.

Regards,

Clean the rust off and apply WD-40, to a paper towel, and wipe the metal, leaving a thin protective film.
Then desiccant as described. You may want to consider putting the set into a small plastic snap top container to help the desiccant be more effective
