Thought I'd share what I attempting.

We need brass control horns for these WnW and any other of the ol' WWI aircraft we've been building lately.

No I didn't draw this, our R&D Engineer at work whipped this out in about 10 minutes, my describing it to him slowed him down. He's an old Ultralight pilot (that means he gave it up ) so he knows what a control horn is.

Top hole is .3mm, plenty big for Ezline or a simulated bolt. Bottom hole is 1mm for the connecting rod.

Send the file off to Shapeways but it's too small. Think I'm going to get him to put like 6-8 of them on a runner and maybe then they can print it.

Whacha think?

if you are going to do that you may as well come up with an aerial insulator in 32 for antenna wires also.

I'll ask: why not a one-piece horn with both top and bottom? Cut a slot and glue it in securely- the rigging will only make it stronger. This- looks a little dicey, contact-wise. Honest crit, bro!

that's the plan Chuck. In the case of the Eindecker the control horn is mounted on the connecting rod of the elevators, not like on the leading edge of the elevator.

Here's what I made so far. I've determined that i've made these too long. Back to the drawing board. The parts at the bottom are the valve lifters of the engine, that's just to show Roy what I'm talking about putting it on a runner. But the direction I'm going is exactly what you suggested. I'll use what I scratch build on this one but the next Eindecker (E.IV cause I got the engine) will have the Shapeways horns (if it works out)

Very nice.

If I might make a suggestion, it might be better to have some kind of dimple to locate a drill bit than to have the hole. Not sure of the capabilities of the printers, but it could be hard for them to print a .3mm hole.

If you ever need help w/ that kind of thing, just let me know, I can help out w/ designing small stuff like that.

LOL, such a simple little part. Bob that would be a perfect part to scratchbuild one accurate master and then make a little rubber mold and make dozens of resin copies.

Here are a couple of examples, then I will explain what I did.

Each of the 3 parts that made up my logo on this model were flat backed. Once I had practiced a little on these, it became quite easy to make many copies with a minimum of rejects and wasted resin.

Why not have it Photo Etched out of brass?

Phil, that would be nice but one reason we need to go brass on this is strength. The two previous WnWs I have done both have broken control horns now.

Tom, I think I've said in the past you have a gift of understatement, I would love to do photoetched, not sure how to do it though. Any experience?

Afraid I don't have any experience, I did find this, could be too pricey if you only want
a few parts though...it does say they ship worldwide.

I also read that this place does custom photo etching, I don't see it mentioned
on the site, but might be worth an email...and while you're at it, get yourself

I'll add it to my wish list...in negotiations with an old watch dude (not Paul) about a watchmaker's lathe right now. It wouldn't do much for this project but be nice to have.
