Revell 1/144 HMCS Snowberry

Yes i think the brass in this PE set is a slight problem on the sharper folds but i supose you could aneal it but then that could raise other issues unless you get it just right, i dont think i would want to anneal a spru given the various sizes of the parts and their various heat sink properties , i can see small parts burning next to larger parts, some of the links in chains and shackles here are microns.

An example this evening why i am struggling on with PE but i am sure 3D could match this. The plastic ones seem to have a winding handle but the PE ones dont, just a brake lever. i wonder if they were electric or manual.

Hi Bob, i have only just realised what these are :) i think they are hose reals for fires etc, i was thinking they looked like powered winches so as hoses they would be hand operated , my PE ones above dont appear to have any handles but maybe they just span the drum to wind them in.

Thats as far as i can go now with assembling sub sections. back to PE and superstructure now. At least it looks like it will turn out quite well.

I had to admit defeat on the anchor winch and a few other details so i have ordered a small amount of 3D print from Swordfish. Individually the parts are quite cheap but he does everything for this kit and together you could easily spend a few hundred £/$

I have a PE one to build, the kit one to alter or a 3d one on order.....spoilt for choice :rotf I ordered one in 3D because i had ordered the anchor winch and these things are so cheap i wanted to make the order a reasonable amount...ie: more than the postage from Belgium.
one of the things about 3D seems to be once you have the program it doesnt cost much so you get 2 winches and 2 hedgehogs 4 bofors guns etc per order so i will have a load of spare parts i will never need. I cant imagine ever building anything Royal navy again in 1/144 in fact i dont think there is anything ?

I seem to be spending hours trying to solve problems thrown up by a lot of the PE rather than actually benefiting from it.
There are 32 depth charge storage holders
They are made up of 1 part folded 5 times to form a concerteener that is then squashed flat. the problem is these bends are 180 degree and the brass just snaps and you end up with 3 parts, these are barely 2mm across

i started with 32 parts, i will end up with around 100 parts and nothing i can use.
To make matters worse these fittings were originally moulded into the deck and the first job is to shave them off so there is no stand by plan B
The truth is i have bitten off more than i can chew here "once again" and its become a rescue job of bodge parts and 3D print salvage parts. the basics like ladders and walls with right angle folds etc are no problem but the tiny intricate parts like this and the ammo holders/winch etc that require parts folded back on themselves 5 times just to gain thickness are proving difficult for me and TBH not really very convincing even when completed anyway :-(

Don't let it frustrate you Paddy. Makes you wonder why they didn't make it thicker stock but maybe just go ahead break them down and rejoin?

Probably sending the wrong sentiment as often happens on line :) I am a bit cross with myself because i cant do what i want to do and frustrated once again at the limits of PE . I bought some magnets of ebay to hold the PE so could solder it. they looked idea but now they have arrived they are plastic :-( ...not a lot of good for soldering but a good concept had it worked. Basically 2 L shaped magnets that fit together and would enable you to hold 2 parts at a right angle sandwiched in the L, they look like metal but are shiny silver plastic.......Drat.....

The depth charge holders will not be seen really as they are under the drum of the charge , i will go to the model shop tomorrow and see if i can find some evergreen plastic H section extrusion like an I beam that would form 2 legs and a cradle for the charge. That would solve it :) bit like a cradle for a whisky barrel.

Sounds like me with Aber or PART PE detail sets. five to seven layers need to be perfectly aligned for a light?
:bang head

Micro-Mark sold a magnetic gluing jig for around $40 but you can make it yourself from the side of an old PC case or duct vent cap (the flat metal bit) and cabinet latch magnets.

NOT MY PHOTOS... here simply to illustrate:

Of course, you can always substitute steel machinist's blocks and...

Despite the problems you're doing some beautiful work Paddy. 3D is definitely the way to go, but I'm biased. Loving the build so far. I have the HMCS Snowberry in 1/72. I don't know if I will ever build her. I got refs buried somewhere and I think that the fact that you needed to know which year you were building because of retro fits etc and the fact that all her sisters were different led me to not do the build way back when. Love seeing the ship though so enjoying your build.
