QUICK BASES - Lots and lots of great ideas

Quick bases with balsa wood bridges

Here is a small river bridge quick base.
It is a two lane (small vehicle bridge) or it can support a
large tank.
How to make a “Hard packed dirt road with a barrel” Quick Base:

Items needed:
1.Inexpensive “Dollar Store” picture frame.
2.Foam-core board (paper/foam/paper).
3.Various acrylic paints.
4.Paint brushes.
5.Artist Pastels (“Alphacolor” Earth Tones).
6.Spackling paste (dry-wall repair paste).
7.Hobby-knife.
8.White glue (“Elmers” all purpose glue).
9.Scale wooden barrel (damaged).
10.Felt pads.

a. Start with a “dollar store” 8” X 10” picture frame (exterior dimensions of approximately 9.5” X 12”). Discard the glass and cardboard backing. Remove the wall hanging hardware if there is any already attached.
b.Using your hobby-knife, cut the foam-core board to fit the frame, and bend the holders to secure the foam-core board.
c.Remove the foam-core board from the frame. Using your hobby-knife, cut more foam-core board to raise the edges and secure it to the foam-core board with your “Elmers” all purpose white glue.
d.Build the bridge as you want it (use whatever reference you have).

Note the worn and beat up look of the wood. It's not a new bridge.
e.Paint the water Blue/Green/Brown depending on how you want it. You can add rocks if
you want to also.
f.When dry, Dry-brush white for faster moving water, until you get the desired look. As you can see the sides of the road are raised using foam core board.
g.When completely dry, flip it over and attach the self-adhesive type felt pads and you are ready to display a model.

h.If you want more dirt/dust for your base, use ground up pastel chalk to add more realism.

I can already invision a micro diorama with the bridge, all cracked and broken through, with a big fat Tiger sittin right in the middle of the mess (y) .

Re:Quick bases with balsa wood bridges

So when are you going to build it??? LOL
This is an old one that I did years ago, but when I see the
guys doing the turned over Stug and such, I have to agree,
that having one that fell through a bridge like this, would
be really cool, (after you destroy the bridge and all.
Great idea, I might have to do one like that sometime.

Re:Quick Bases - Brick Roads

I had some time to hit the garage yesterday and took a bunch
of pictures of the 27 Quick Bases that I have out there...
Yes, I'm a pack rat and proud of it.
You never know how many of these things you or the guys going
to a contest might need  :S
I've probably given away 20 or so also... :blink
In hinde site, I know that I should have put all of these
at a slight angle to the base (someday I might go back and do
it adding a sidewalk or rubble but for now, they will have to stand
as is)...
Here are a few more pictures of the various "Brick Roads Quick Bases"
and some of the models from my display case. (just for size reference).
All are 1/35th scale...
Hope you enjoy

Re:Quick Bases - Hard packed dirt roads & grass edges

Andy,
Thanks, glad you like them, hope they help? :)
Hope someone will try and and let me know how theirs come out???
I have some Winter/snow ones to post, but can't seem to find the
write-up, so I will re-do it this weekend and try to post it...
Thanks to Gary, (he moved them all together, so they are easier
to seach and look at)... ;)

I'm working on some snow "quick bases" here is one of the old ones
that I have, but I'm going to make some more that are updated.
Shawn
If anyone has used this, let me know how it worked out for you. OK?
:hmmm :idonno

This one is the basic dollar store frame, with foam core board cut to fit
and spackle spread over the foam core board. tracks were put into the
spackle before it was dried and White paint was dry brushed on the raised
surfaces to give it a less monotone look.

This is a frozen lake or field.

I have one for T-34's in a deep snow field, but didn't load it yet... And I have some others
in the works. Hopefully I can get to them this week.

Sorry, they are kinda washed out with all the white. I will try and get better pictures on
the next batch.

Here is what they look like stacked up in "Dollar Store" shoe boxes
(to keep the dust off of them) out in my garage.

Sure glad there are smart folks around these parts. :woohoo:

Tony,
Some say thrifty, I just admit, I'm Cheap... ;)

ModelGuru,
Glad you liked them too...
They are cheap and easy to build and look good to display them on for
a contest that you don't want to base them on...
