Discussing the racers on our road trip yesterday I said I felt like the colors were boring.
@errains said the Gee Bee looks like a toy. I get it, there's not much there.
He started talking about this Black Basing technique.
After a lengthily conversation I thought I would shear this video series on Black Basing...enjoy! The Basics Black Basing 201

As he described it I remembered I tried to do a Sabre years ago using kinda sorta the same technique but without the black base. It didn't turn out well. I've read a couple of articles and these videos and figure what the hey.
To answer my own question I kept asking Eric. why use red as a color for a green effect. Well Red is a complementary color of green. I don't know what that means but that's what the color chart said.
Here's the Gee Bee with some read marbling, the green came later. The red was a flat so remembering the mistake I made on the Sabre, it was various finishes, I did a clear gloss then did the mist of green.
the tones are very subtle now.
I don't want it to be too stark because these aircraft are brand new. It's hard to see in these photos. Eric suggested some grey for shading around the edges. I wasn't brave enough to do that.
This color is so dark it's hard to see it in photos. Instead of using these colors I might need to use lighter tints?
