Latest Acquisitions Revisited!

OK, I'm turning into a hoarder. No kit above $25.

Been there done that.
I picked up XX dozens of the ERTL/AMT kits in the 80s at the ERTL outlet in Dyersville, Iowa, ever time I past through the town, which was twice a week. Small kits $.25 - $.50 each. Tankers and bombers $5.00 - $8.00 each. What ever they had in the store. Most boxes had something wrong, plastic was all good.

Bunch of models came in in the past little while. Gathering train stuff for a vignette I am imagining. Didnt take a picture of the book for the BR86 but got one. Also the complete detail set for it and a few more cars. Also some external stuff, like rail beds and ties and hydro pol;es asn train equipment.. I picked up the Ryefield Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf H early and was quite disappointed. It has a sharp step in the turret and from what I have found online it is missing H related stuff such as the drivers view port. What really caught me by surprise is it has only one marking option for a Pz.Kpfw IV Ausf. J Late. The QA people must have been sleeping through that. The Ryefield T-34/85 look very nice. I need to find my T-34 book for when I build them and again I have a vignette in mind. Temporary insanity saw me get 2 Pz.Kpfw I's, the A and B in 1/16 scale. Suffice to say these are big. I have some stuff coming for the JS-2 and more wheels and tracks for other kits I have. The Puma was a surprise splurge. I was paying for my Sons Christmas presents and at the bottom of the page was the Puma for 1/3rd the cost I saw anywhere else. Their mistake my gain. I looked to see if there were any more deals and the pumas were listed now at $153 Cdn. So I saved over $100 on it although if I'm honest I could have save much more if I didnt buy it lol. Now if the specialist can cure whatever is happening to me I might get more bench time in and be able to build more.

The Quinta Studio decals are 3D printed decals and incredible. Got one for a Gaz-66 I will be doing and one for one of my Zil 131 vehicles.

The results of me being bored on stakeouts had really rolled in this week. I really should not have eBay on my phone. As my mind is well into the disfuctional side. The past three to four months I keep thinking about doing a diorama or even a number of them. Then over the past three weeks I've been thinking of doing something for the "In Another World" campaign.

So here are the latest from mail delivered

I don't know MP
But I've been eyeing it also for 1946 that's swirling about in my head.

Kinda thought it would be a cool German designed, Russian built for the Japanese to use for the invasion of the West coast.

Yeah I'm still stuck in the little story I wrote for the first In Another World campaign.

Was this real? I see PanzerIV and Panther in this. I thought the Pz.Kpf VI was the Tiger I
As far as I can find there were a few made with different guns. In the end the Tiger as we know it was chosen. I'm still looking for info on it but its not easy on the internet.
I'm thinking I will just build it as is. I know there is a Panzer Tracts book out there with info but its hard to find so far.

I have been adding to my stash for the last few months and just not really posting about it. Time to do a catch up.

I have been slowing down on my buying. Still waiting on a couple of WNW kits to come in from Andy's (if they ever do come in) We shall see.

Many years ago, 1980 to be precise, I entered my first IPMS competition. It was a National and there were more than 3000 entries. I did very well in competition and it actually was a factor in launching my model career. At that show, some guy entered a sailing ship model in 1/100 scale that, at the time, was the most gorgeous model I had ever seen. He had wired it and lighted the Captain's and Officer's quarters and the gun decks. I could never get that ship out of my head. At that time, the kit was extremely expensive and even then, very difficult to find. I looked for it at shows all over the country to no avail. Toward the end of the VLS era, about 20 years later and 20 years ago, I was able to finally buy the kit as well as it's sister kit from one of my customers. It was the Heller La Soleil Royale ship of the line. He also had the Heller HMS Victory in the same scale. I bought both.

Then, in 2007, just before I sold VLS, a customer came into the office and asked to tour the building. That was a common occurrence and I had trained a couple of employees to give the tour. It was a very large building of some 45,000 square Feet! I wasn't busy at the time, so I gave him the grand tour myself. It lasted about an hour, included the vast museum, and the last rooms we visited were my modeling rooms accessed off my office. While there he saw the Heller kits and asked if I would sell them. I was building the never-ending Logistics diorama even then, and as it had been going very slow, I thought about if I would ever get around to building the Royale. Then he made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I even told him he was offering way too much money, far more than they were worth and I didn't really want to sell them. Hi insisted and so I sold them to him. I think I regretted doing that as soon as he left.

I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel for the Logistics diorama and, last week, I came upon some photos of the La Soleil Royale on the Internet. Susan posted something about my obsession with that kit on Facebook and a hobby shop owner in Florida told her to have me call him. Long story short. I bought it. I can't wait to start on this awesome kit! Probably in another year! At 80 years old, am I an optimist or what? :) Look at the rigging on this puppy! I plan on displaying it in rough Atlantic water with the sails billowing in the wind. I also want to light the officer's quarters, gun decks and the lamps on the stern fantail and the weather deck. I am guessing that built, the ship is around two to two and a half feet long and at least two feet tall. It should be delivered tomorrow!

I think I saw one of these at my local shop a while back. It is an impressive kit. Many years ago I build the Revell Constitution with full sails. It was huge as well. Thing is the sails hid everything and as complex as the rigging is, it just wasn't all that visible with the huge white sails in the way. I thought if I was to ever build another it would be sans sails.

Way cool. I remember staring at those in my dads hobby shop, but the sea wasnt really my thing. Seeing one built though just blows my mind with all the complexity of the rigging etc. Looking forward to seeing your build Bob. Sounds like an exciting visual.

Well I did it again. I have a building by miniart of an Apothecary and was looking for a bigger street scene. I saw Miniart did a 3 building scene but could not find it. Instead I found the other 2 buildings at the hobby shop and stuck them in my cart. Then I got an emails that some kits I was asking about here about to be posted. Hurried over to the site and now i have a couple of the new Border Models T-34s, the Miniart repair truck, and tractor on the way with the buildings. I think thats it now, maybe , i hope. Started playing with he one building and am trying to visualize a street scene with a couple of T-34/85s coming up and a gaggle of Russian troops running alongside.. I just need to find the right troops now. Kind of wondering if I should put a tram on the road also or maybe a gun. See how that works out.
I was surprised to see the T-34/76s come in a wooden box. Will be interesting to see them.

Build it as you see fit James, looks like an interesting subject. :soldier
Hey MP,

The turret looks like it came from a Panzer IV? The chassis and tracks are from the Ferdinand. The Ferdinand was a Porsche design in competition for the new German Tiger II or KingTiger tank with the Henschel company. The first photo he posted was, (I believe) the original Porshe entry in the competition.

IMG_2264.JPG

In the competition Henschel won and produced the Tiger IIs we are all familiar with. Not certain why, but there were many Porsche turrets built, 50 were mounted on the Henschel King Tiger chassis. The Ferdinand designed chassis' were built as tank destroyers called Elephants. Apparently some were built in the original tank design with the original turrets and named the Ferdinand. I was never aware that any of the Porsche tanks were actually produced, but, according to Wikipedia, there were actually 71 manufactured and put into service, in addition to the elephants. The one you mentioned looks like a combination of the Panther and the Panzer IV turret? The Mantlet looks too big to be a Panzer IV. Very strange!

I'm sure there is an expert out there that can better explain this.

I have built the Revell constitution with and without sails, I did the same with the Cutty Sark many years ago, back in the 1960s. I believe those kits were 1/196th scale. about half the scale of the Heller kits which are 1/100th. I know exactly what you are saying about the sails. I experienced that as well, but, I plan on making these sails at an angle opposed to straight on. I also want to make thenm a stained beige/brown color with the stitching. They sell the aftermarket sails for it and they have the real stitching on them. Because I want it in water, rough seas, the sails would have to have been unfurled. Something as in this photo except with rougher seas and stronger winds. My thoughts are to stain the sails with hot tea, then use Elmer's white glue to dry them on a large compound curved surface like a smooth ball to acquire the shape I want. I believe this photo is an English ship?

Thanks James! I haven't built one of those since 1968. let's see, that's 52 years ago! Kinda scary! Oh well, onwards and upwards!
