I think I'm turning Japanese...

Fantastic! Your finishes always give me something to strive for. Maybe someday I'll achieve that level of excellence. Until then, I'll just have to keep trying...

Thanks guys, I did more painting on the Ki-61...the non-skid wing walk markings, the anti-glare paint on the nose, control surfaces, and the wing leading edge yellow ID markings were all masked off and painted.

Next I will paint on a couple of bands on the fuselage and then gloss coat the model.

This is an interesting photograph of a Ki-61 I found and the photograph shows the camouflage scheme well, my model will be painted in a similar camouflage scheme of dark green streaks and mottles over a BMF. This is a colorized photograph but still shows some nice detail anyway, notice how the green paint has mostly worn off near the wing roots.

Here is another colorized photograph of a different Ki-61...cool looking camouflage paint on the rear of the fuselage! :drool

I particularly like the lower picture. :woohoo: It looks like the rear of that KI had vines overpainted on the rear fuselage (y) Very different .

Cheers, Christian B)

I see the vines you're talking about Chris, looks more like they didn't let off the trigger on the airgun.

Love it Les! :love (y)

Looking really good Les. (y)

Is that yellow on the inside of the landing gear doors? I am no expert but never seen that on Japanese aircraft before. Maybe it is just a product of the colorization?

Thanks for looking guys!

To try and copy that 'vine' style of camouflage seen on the second colorized photograph would be difficult in 1/48 scale but no reason that would not work in the larger 1/32 scale.

The yellowish color on the inside of the landing gear doors of the Ki-61 in the second colorized photograph is unlikely to be really that color...like most colorized photographs the really small details in them are often not correct and is what gives them away as color fakes.
From everything I came across about the interior color of the Ki-61 landing gear doors they were mostly bare metal on the production machines. Often I see models of Ki-61's with these items painted in Aotake but I am not so sure if any of the production aircraft used Aotake, Aotake was used on most of the Japanese Navy aircraft but not used very much at all on Army aircraft.

The bands on the fuselage were masked and painted on...now this model is starting to get some much needed color. I thought the BMF was hideous and boring.

Even though the surface detail on this old kit is overstated I kind of like it...after the rest of the markings and camouflage or on it the surface detail will look okay.

For a hideous and boring metal finish; it is the sharpest and smoothest one I've ever seen. I'd kill to be able to make mine look that good; especially with darker panels! The color bands do make this look better and I agree; I would love to be able to mask such straight bands on a fuselage like that.

Thanks for your comments!

For masking off the bands around the fuselage I used very thin strips of Tamiya masking tape, Tamiya tape makes these type of jobs a breeze because you can bend it to match the curve of the fuselage without creases forming which allow paint to leak under and ruin your paint job.

The BMF on this model was painted with a dull custom mix of metall and the different shades of metal panels were sprayed free handed with a slightly brighter shade of metall...these were sprayed free handed because the green camouflage streaks that will be painted on later will most likely cover up the fact that the different shades of BMF do not have a sharp edge to them.

Some of the camouflage painting needed to be done BEFORE the markings are added and some painting of the camouflage will be done afterwards to give the illusion of the field applied green paint overspray drifting onto some of the markings. The blue band on the fuselage was most likely painted over the green streaks so it was important to have a sharp edge on that band. The unit marking on the tail also looked like it was painted on top of the green streaks so the decal will be needed to be applied on top of the green paint.
I also sprayed some metall on the non-skid patches on the wing root to give the appearance of it being worn off.
