Das Werk 7.5cm Pak 40 in 1/16th scale

That is pretty much what I read. I know that many acrylics are rather picky about the thinners used especially when spraying the paint. This is the first model I am doing with Vallejo for the final colors. What do you use for your primers Tim?
I use Tamiya's fine surface primer. I have tried Vallejo primer, but didn't really like it. Maybe it was me not putting on a good coat with the airbrush, Idk. Anyway The Tamiya rattle can primer always lays down a flawless smooth finish for me.
I use Testors clear dullcote to lock in paint during the painting process and for the final clear coat. I have tried Vallejo's clear varnish, but didn't like it for the same reason I don't like their primer. Testors has never disappointed me.

Time for another update. I have the corrections to the shield done and it is all in paint now. Next step will be weathering with all that entails. With such a large scale the details become more noticeable and it becomes more problematic to get those details "just right". I have some things in mind and some photos of an unrestored gun that I am not to sure where it is actually located, but it has a lot of wear, tear, but not a lot of rust or damage. Paint is worn off, but otherwise not anything weird or crazy. Here is where we are at the moment.

This is where I will be pondering what has happened, could have happened, and what kind of garbage it could have placed on it. With the cone nuts on the front of the shield cross drilled like they are supposed to be I could rig some wire across so it could hold branches and brush. Once this is done I get to start on the Sdkfz 251 to go with it. If they had an Opel Maultier, or the smaller half track utility vehicle or an RSO in this scale, that would make more sense. You have to work with what you have and 251's were used to tow these 1400Kg beasts.

So to be specific I am interested in paints that work for WW2 German armor colors.

Thanks.
I am late to the party since I missed this post but will answer anyway.
Well, for primers I was using Alclad with microfiller, but was having issues with the primer releasing when pulling masking tape off. I now think it was my application, but alas, I started using Mr Hobby Special Finish 1500 in black, gray or white thinned about 20% with Mr Leveler and have had no trouble with masking release. I began giving a mist over the surface then waiting 60 seconds before doing a medium coat. I suspect that would work with Akclad as well.
The Vallejo Model Air works well as you know and it so easy to use with no smell and I wrote a post on thinning which you read already and are using.
Tamiya is wonderful also and I thin with Mr Leveler about 40% for spraying and usually get a flawless finish.
When I wanted enamel I was using Humbrol but hate the little cans and the inconsistency in viscosity. I would thin with Xylene about 50% depending on thickness of the paint. However, I have discovered a new (for me) enamel from Model Car World that are made in North Carolina. I have ordered a 100 color rack for my store. They come in bottles like Model Master and even have cross reference numbers for the MM match color. They spray so nicely, but I still use Xylene for thinning. They have a nice strong surface once dry. I will list their colors as it is extensive, and I think you can buy directly from them at https://mcwfinishes.com/.
Here is the list of colors:

Paul, your work is top notch. I marvel at how good it all looks!!
Thanks Greg!
O.M.G with the paints!! It would not surprise me if those were actually the old Testor's MM paints with more colors added. A whole lot of the names look VERY familiar.
Getting the shield all reworked took a lot of work especially since it had already been assembled and them broken apart then reassembled. Getting that front plate to look perfectly FLAT without bends in the middle was an absolute pain! I have the same thing that will need to be done to the shield on the Sdkfz 251/22 as it has the same issues even though the shield is much smaller. Also many of the "omissions" (like the firing button?!) won't be needed on that gun, though the firing button and elevation rack will need to be fixed for sure.
I also found that the scope is perfectly centered horizontally in the opening and the opening is perfect for looking straight forward with the scope. The scope just sits about 0.6 to 0.8 mm too high which I was able to adjust with a mod to the scope mount.
This thing is just so big that every little detail just highlights itself. You can look at it for a while and still notice something new. You can SEE the details! I will try and do a final "Fix IT" list once I get it done. Now it is time to focus on getting down and dirty. :soldier

Am almost thinking about building that Merit kit I bought off of you next. The German 15cm sFH 18 howitzer in 1/16th scale. It might be a bit easier as I won't be attaching it to any kind of tow vehicle.

That is very likely since Mike is sending the Testors rack labels for the extra military colors I ordered from the old Model Master plastic rack as well.

@Heavens Eagle, note that the example you showed was one preserved in a russian museum by greasing it up. The Finns used them for a long time so would be a better visual of the wear and tear of combat, or training, use.

I am mainly using that last photo as a reference for paint wear and where there would be a little rust. There would not be all that much rust, but paint could get worn off in certain areas (like the spades) and there would be accumulations of dirt in areas from being moved and such. Just going to play it by eye and see what I end up with.
Something that I read quite a while ago is that the paints that Germany used were actually pretty decent and didn't wear and chip off all that bad. I am sure that later in the war that changed, but even then the stuff wouldn't rust like a Caterpillar bulldozer left sitting out for 20 years. Remember that they didn't use salt to melt the ice and snow.
