Color of a Flak38A

Phil

Active member
I have a verlinden 2cm Flak 38A resin kit #2232 that I want to incorporate into one of my Luftwaffe dio boards.

Would this have been painted in the std grey or yellow, with any camo stripes on it, or a case of choose either?

Thanks,
Phil

Greetings Phil;

..... I agree with jknaus .............. :D

If it was manufactured before 1943.... more than likely it
would be panzer Grey.
..... although, some Grey guns where re-paint panzer yellow
in 1943 in accordance with the OKW paint color changes, and
some where not.

If it was manufactured from 1943 tell late 1944 it would
more than likely have a base coat of panzer Sand.

In late 1944-1945 we saw the panzer Grey appear again on some
vehicles, and guns. Most historians think this is because of
paint supply shortages, and the manufactures were using there
old stocks of paint.

Camouflage

1939-1943 On the panzer Grey Vachel's, and guns, it was not unlikely to
see German Green applauded in various patterns.

1943-late 1945 German panzer sand base coat. With German Red-brown,
and German Green applied in various patterns, some times Panzer
Grey was also used.

1945.... No firm rules. Whatever you can get your hands on.

When it comes to the Germans paint, and camouflage during the Second
World War there was always examples to the rule.

If you are making a diarama..... decide which date you wish to
your dio to represent.

to be a little bit more precise:

period 1: sept. 1st '39 - june 30th '40: 2/3grey with 1/3 brown
period 2: july 1st '40 - feb. 18th '43: grey
period 3: feb. 19th '43 - dec. 19th '44: dark yellow with field applied camo of commander's decision ( = no camo, yellow+brown, yellow+green or yellow+brown+green)
period 4: dec. 20th '44 - may 8th '45: dark green with factory applied hard edge camo of dark yellow+brown

exceptions from the above mentioned ordered colors could be seen during the whole war - e.g. some equipment was painted plain grey in period one, some units had camo applied in their field workshops in period 2, many funky camo schemes could be seen in period 3 and supply shortage plus bomb damage and time problems hindered some factories to deliver with the ordered colors ...

additionally some older equipment at the front wasn't repainted immediately due to combat duties and was subsequently repainted when there was time and supply - so in spring '43 several equipment still painted grey could be seen and particularly at the end of the war lots of battle veterans weren't repainted dark green, only factory fresh equipment ...

i hope that this answers your question!

Greetings Phil;

Now that we have thourally confused you, get a book
on German camouflage and get confused again.

This is one of the most debate issues for modelers
that there is.

There are no firm rules. Every book I have has a different
opinion on color schemes, and I have a few.

That is why I just gave you the basics.
