Brattonsville South Carolina

Cindy and I took a day trip up to Brattonsville in York County SC. Great day to absorb some local history.

If you've ever wanted to have a stroll around a Southern Plantation here's the place to do it. Hope my pictures does it justice.

I'll add commentary later. Most of the structures at the site have been moved there from other area plantations. It's rare that 200+ year old wooden structures survive, what they have done is moved several buildings to this Historical Site to concentrate conservation efforts.

But several buildings are original. Others are built on top of original foundations.

The pictures turned out pretty good.

This house is known as the "Brick House" for obvious reasons. It's said that they build out of brick as a show of wealth. Not sure if I agree with that. Wood would have been more scarce around there than brick, which is made of mud, and if you've ever been to the Piedmont section of South Carolina, you know we have plenty of muddy clay. I digress..This house was not open to the public. It was build around 1850s.

From my count there's probably about 3-4 generations of home sites on these grounds. Not all the homes are original to the site.

What makes this site remarkable is that it survived for 220+ years. Plantations like this would be exceptional, but not uncommon in the South. It's said that this plantation was over 8000 acres in it's prime, there's history of plantations with 10000, 15000 and even 100,000 acres in the early years of settling the "back country".

This building here..

This is one of the 3 original buildings on the property, it is a slave cabin. Made of brick it would have been one of the more comfortable cabins for slaves that you would find on a plantation. They suspect the brick slave cabins were for the house slaves because of their proximity to the main house. Notice how the walls are painted white and the arched brick work over the window.

I have to tell ya, while we were in this building, we both got a very uneasy vibe, maybe just knowing how a poor soul lived there wanting to be free, or maybe there was some lost energy there...don't know. But I surely felt something there that I did not feel anywhere else.

More later.

No more pictures Ron but more comments. I'll have them later if you like.

Are their more Plantations like this? yes, they are all over the place, not this well preserved but they are out there.

Cool stuff Bob. I think I've been there. Went to Florida in the 70's and visited almost every historical site down that side of the country. You guys look like you were having a great day.

Hey Bob. Good find ! Guess the wife and I will have to go down there now. Err when the weather is a bit more forgiving. :S
Thanks for the pictures.

Cheers, Christian B)

The Green River Plantation is a beautiful mansion located in Rutherfordton, NC. Today the mansion stands in all of its glory on 356 acres, and brings sunshine to the hearts of its guest from the moment they enter its gates. The plantation is open to the public by reservations only, and is available for all types of events.

The stately mansion has been lovingly restored and is open for tours daily by reservation only. It was the year 1987 when the current owners, the Cantrell's took on this project. Mrs. Cantrells grandfather shared the idea with her that he would have liked to have owned this place in his lifetime. She was only 10 years old at the time, but for many years she kept the dream in her heart that maybe one day she might fulfill her grandpas vision. In 1985 the Cantrells viewed the home, but it was not until 1987 that they actually had the opportunity to purchased it. The Cantrells are joined in this project by their daughter Amanda Cantrell. She is the events and reservations coordinator. Amanda and her staff also prepare meals for plantation guests. Meals are served by reservation and there must be a group of 10 to set up a luncheon or dinner. There are many times that smaller groups may be added together, the holidays are a perfect time for this, because there are so many groups to accommodate. The meals can be served in different areas of the plantation, indoors and outdoors options are available. The plantation offers an array of services from Tours of the mansion, weddings, receptions, church and family gatherings and B+B.

“Perfect Wedding!”

Reviewed August 30, 2011

My husband and I were recently married here. We had the ceremony and reception here and it was perfect - exactly what we wanted! The people were so friendly and great to work with, the food and cake were amazing and the property is absolutely gorgeous! All of our friends and family had such a great time! We plan to return on our one-year anniversary!

“Wonderful Venue”

Reviewed July 17, 2011

My wife and I recently had our wedding reception at the Green River Plantation. It was just a tremendous experience. Ms. Amanda Cantrell is a top-notch hostess and organized everything to perfection. The food was outstanding and the service was impeccable. Ms. Cantrell also prepared our wedding cake which was beautiful and delicious! We stayed at the plantation on our wedding night and this was also great! The next morning we enjoyed a wonderful breakfast in the main Green River House. As a southern history buff...I was blown away and I highly recommend it!

“We could not have picked a better place to have our son's wedding.”

Reviewed May 27, 2011

The Green River Plantation worked out perfect for our son's wedding. It turned out absolutely beautiful. We were very pleased with everything. The rehearsal dinner was held here on Saturday night. The ceremony was on Sunday We added the horse and carriage it carried the Bride in then after the ceremony it carried the Bride and Groom off what a great addition.
Amanda and her staff took care of all the food for the rehearsal dinner and reception. They did all of the decorations for the reception and ceremony. Amanda made a beautiful wedding cake.
They were great to work with. So many comments from friends and family about how pretty everything was. We also used a DJ for the reception referred to us by Amanda. (Michael Sprouce) I recommend him.
We had two of the Bed & Breakfast rooms with breakfast each morning and that was also outstanding. Thanks to everyone at Green River Plantation for such a pleasant experience.

See what people are saying...

I've seen that house some time back Chris, notice how the house had been added on and on. Seldom is it you'll see an old house that was built in one fell swoop.

Rutherfordton is a great area, nice quiet but close to Charlotte if anyone has the notion to go there.

great stuff there bob - phantastic pics ... i love places where history can be smelled!

the only unnecessary pic is that of the snake (what snake is that btw? surely venomous!) ... me no like snakes!

That was just a common Black Snake, non venomous and good pest control, but SNAKE non the less. He was blocking my way to the Blacksmith shop. I did scream like a girl...then left him be. If it had been in my yard it would have been a dead snake. I have this agreement with them, I love the job they do as long as I don't see them.
