2023 PLASTIC SURGEON MEETING POSTS

20230511_193611.jpg20230511_193618.jpg20230511_193622.jpg
Joe brings the Tamiya 1/35 JMSDF armored you-drive-em-army-jeep-car and a 1/35 Russian T-90 (?). Joe tried a new techique on the windows of the Japanese model to subtly tint them without going overboard. Tamiya clear blue, washed with lacquer thinner on a cotton bud.
I had my doubts about the technique, but Joachim's results are impossible to dispute!
20230511_193446.jpg20230511_193457.jpg20230511_193522.jpg20230511_193702.jpg
Jose' is still unpacking boxes after his move from Kalifornia. The 1/6 scale Dragon M-16A2 is pretty nifty! Tamiya's 1/72 F4D-1.

The Airfix HS-126 is an eye-catcher! Holly shades of Flying Baby Doc, the camo on the Airfix Henschel is hand painted! (Is there a lotion for dry, cracked skin like that?)

The 1/48 Hasegawa Italian Navy Harrier was modified to the AV-8B+ by reshaping the nose with epoxy. Not long after Jose' completed his modification, the 1/48 AV-8B+ kit was issued. Bless their Hearts!

Teresa goes to work at 0-Dark-O'clock Friday morning so we don't stick around much after Show & Tell.

On a personal note, lookie what I found at our Fareway!! Southerners will know my reason for praising God for such a find!
Mike & Michelle Trent are responsible for introducing me to Duke's Mayonnaise. If you haven't tried Duke's, DON'T!
You'll be runt for any other brand after that!

That should be enough for now.
Thanks again for looking in!

Thanks Paul. It is good indeed to see my friend Don moving forward.

Business news is that the theme for next year's contest will be "75 Years of NATO". Anything military that served in North American Treaty Organization from 1949 onwards. More news as this exciting Surgeon story unfolds!

Ron's bunnies SUCK! I already chopped the ears and fluffy bunny tail off one and made new ones.
I think a new bunny is required. More "Wallace & Gromit" than "Watership Down".
Wee Bonny Bunny (2).jpg
Like This! Separate ears to ease casting. This ain't gonna be free!
What do you guys think?

Don called us on the road to Marion. He was in good spirits. He said "I'm painting boobs!"
That MUST be a cheer-inspiring modeling activity!
IMG953175(1).jpgIMG953176.jpg
He wasn't kidding!
Don has also learned to send pictures via smartphone!

IMG957040(1).jpg

Satellite Surgeon Mark Karolus constructed a tidy Confederate navy "aircraft carrier". CSS Teaser, with her recon balloon Gazelle.
I believe Mark's model is the 1/192 Flagship Models kit. He sure did a nice job!

Thursday. 25 May 2023. 1900 hours.
The Surgeons gather. The Earth trembles.
20230525_183141.jpg20230525_183149.jpg20230525_183152.jpg20230525_183159.jpg20230525_183207.jpg20230525_183219.jpg20230525_183227.jpg
Ray Powers isn't quite finished with his Tamiya 1/48 scale Lightning P-38F. Ray started this model before he got sick. It was resurrected from the "Shelf of Doom" and nears completion. The sometimes dour Ray comments that if you want a 1/48 P-38, this is the kit to have. "It ain't cheap!"
20230525_183241.jpg20230525_183308.jpg20230525_183320.jpg20230525_183325.jpg20230525_183339.jpg
Ray's Grandson Colton nears completion on the Tamiya 1/35 Jagdpanther he graciously accepted form me to finish. He asked me to repeat the ridiculous, sob-story I told him about how this model came to be in my possession and why I wanted him to have it for his very own.
"Sob. Gasp. Now my healing can begin. Boo-hoo-hooo!" Curt Young gave me a standing ovation for my over-the-top performance of this silly story. Colton plans a 1/35 M4A3E8 Sherman as a 1946 3rd Army build. He thinks a 90mm gun might help push the Bolsheviks out of Germany. I suggested said Patton's 3rd Army 1946 Sherman might have been fitted with a Wehrmacht 88mm gun. The US and German armies fighting along side? Imagine the possibilities!
20230525_185938.jpg20230525_185946.jpg20230525_185956.jpg
Carlton Burger built the 1/72 Revell 1962 tooling of their Royal Air Force Spitfire Mk.1a. He comments this might be the worst model airplane he ever built and understandably so! Oddly enough the 1962 decals went on without much fuss. Bravo Mr. Burger!
20230525_190043.jpg20230525_190047.jpg20230525_190056.jpg
Joe's old school Tamiya 1/35 Chi-Ha Japanese tank and 1/48 Ki-46 Dinah interceptor are off the Contemporary Armor beaten path.
Correction on the Tamiya JMSDF armored command vehicle model. It is actually the 1/48 scale kit. My mistake.
20230525_190132.jpg20230525_190038.jpg20230525_190029.jpg
Among Jose's projects are a figure of Manfred von Richtofen with his big dog Moritz, a 1/1200 scale Revell USS Yorktown circa 1939. His 1/72 scale Mexican Air Force T-6 project continues. I fueled the fire by adding another Heller 1/72 T-6 and a bagged Airfix 1/72 Harvard model kit to his production line.

Don brought his finished fit warrior MILF figure. It is STUNNING in person.

Francisco is trying out Tamiya X22 clear and tinting on vac windscreens. He says X22 clear doesn't dissolve when water hits it like Future can do.
It is thinned with Tamiya Lacquer thinner. After a generous sniff, I decided Tamiya's lacquer thinner smells very much like MEK. It tastes a little different. It could be better on the rocks. WOOOOooooo!! Good Stuff!

It was "Present Night". I cast my butt off Wednesday to be ready to give cool stuff away to my fellows!

Don got 8 more resin chianti bottles for his 1/32 Italian fighter pilot vignette.

George got a test shot of TLAR Models 1/700 "Proud Mary" river paddle steamer and a set of resin 1/35 cowboy hats to add to his Vietnam gun truck project. I brought along Ron Schultz' new Bunny kit with a bunch more squirrels and a bath duckie.

A couple of old tool model airplanes and 1/35 resin cowboy hats for Dave Bettis.
Ron and Dave didn't make the meeting this night.
20230522_222253.jpg20230522_221907.jpg
I finally made something big enough for my model brethren to actually see. The 1/350 Three Mile Limit boat and Ronnie's Bunny kit came for Show & Tell. The castings have been coming out crisp, precise and clean. The 1/350 90-footer might be the coolest model I have ever made.

Ronnie Rabbit has a cigar. The other head is Bonnie Bunny. (She's a wee bonny bunny!) Bonnie comes with a huge bottle of vino/liquor and a carrot, see?
I've sold 2 of "Ronnie's Bunnies" kits as soon as they are cast!

There is a Plastic Surgeon picnic in the offing for 24 June. More news as this enthralling ortello unfolds!

Thanks again for looking in!

Here's a sort-of related model story. I had a website customer contact me from Italy. William is his name. He's in Florence.
He wanted to buy the Dragon 1/144 EA-18G Growler "Parts Only" kit I have listed for $1.00. The cheapest International shipping to Italy is $42.00 USD!
Yike!
William wanted the discontinued Growler for his 1/144 USS Nimitz model. I don't have his permission to post his picture, but I cain't resist!
20220825_175953.jpg

Is that cool or what?!
I invited William to join our merry band. The decision is his own to make.

IMG953180.jpg
Don continues to do the most cheerful kind of painting. He calls her "Female Archer" but she could be in fact Diana, the Huntress.
Not quite as racy as the Warrior MILF Bust (?!)

IMG953186.jpgIMG953187.jpg
Archer Woman Diana/Athena? Don's busty Bust painting progresses most cheerily!
IMG953188.jpg
Swords are cool too. I haven't been told what vexes this figure so. Unsatisfactory pedicure? (for a figure with no feet?) hmm.
We were both up painting and exchanging pictures late last Thursday night.
Cheers!

8 June 2023 Meeting post:
20230608_184923.jpg
Ron's Bunnies TLAR #623 made their debut! Smirks and smiles and questions from most of our membership were well recieved! I presented Ron Schultz with a rabbit model set of his own, along with the other freebies I cast him. I expected him to be more surprised than he seemed.
Clever Ron has been silently stalking the bunny thread and already knew what I was up to. Ron approves the use of his sort-of name on the kit. He says "Without no gold tooth, Ronnie Rabbit can't be ME!" Hmm......

20230608_190450.jpg20230608_185240.jpg20230608_185333.jpg20230608_185338.jpg20230608_185348.jpg20230608_185351.jpg20230608_185445.jpg20230608_185250.jpg20230608_185353.jpg20230608_185653.jpg
Model Fun was afoot at Ron's house too! He rehabbed a bunch of Deal's Wheels and Rat Fink models The '70 El Camino Zinger is a conversion of the old Lindberg 1/32 scale kit. I am fond of the Nomad in particular!
20230608_185217.jpg
Webb Groos arrives with an assortment of grenades. Jose Gonzalez fills us in on the hand-launched weapons he learned about in the Mexican Army.
20230608_185213.jpg20230608_185417.jpg
Hey Bob has been working on the Iowa State Fairgrounds racing car collection his brother in law drove. He hasn't tried the Dennis the Menace decals yet, so we chatted about how to coat the ink-jet artwork with clear. His donation for material and effort was most generous!

20230608_190335.jpg20230608_190104.jpg20230608_190110.jpg20230608_190117.jpg20230608_190121.jpg
Colton built an Italeri 1/48 Spitfire IX. I find it ironic he built an American Spitfire and will be followed by a 1/48 RAF Mustang. Grampa Ray helps paint Colton's builds.
20230608_190338.jpg20230608_190150.jpg
Dave Bettis "The King of the Dog Model" found a reasonably priced Revell 1/40 scale M4 Sherman kit.
This Sherman came out way back when Ray Powers was in Junior High School. It is without question or dispute the absolute WORST Sherman kit ever issued. Even Trumpeter models are better by a sliver! Dave loves these vintage classic models and we all have our favorites, don't we?

20230608_190252.jpg20230608_190305.jpg
In other old-tool Model news, Jose' brings his Monogram 1/48 F-5E Tiger II kit and 1/32 Revell Mirage III models. Jose started these in 1993.
This is a commentary on how many of collect all the p/e, resin, aftermarket decals and other bits to make a much better model airplane, right up to and including the issue of the main-stream new-tool kit.
Most of us then, not so unlike Don Quixote', attack the old tool model even though the new cool kit is affordable and readily available.
Sancho advises us otherwise. We usually do it anyway.
20230608_190323.jpg
Mike Rasmussen has begun the vintage Life Like Models Pinta. He also plans to build the vintage Nina and the Santa Maria from the same company. It's nice to see another Surgeon working on sailing ships!
Christopher Columbus must be smiling down from On High while Mike assembles these aging classics! It looks like Mike is doing a fine job!

Speaking of old models,
Nate Stevens found a box of airplane models he packed up in 2011 when he moved to Iowa from Wyoming. They used to hang form the ceiling of his room.
20230608_193025.jpg20230608_193050.jpg20230608_193106.jpg20230608_193213.jpg
His long-imaged "What-If" imagined scenario is evident by these paint jobs! Ivan Khozedub's Yak-23, DKM He-100T's with belly radiatiors and no tail hook, the logical follow on to Graf Zeppelin's 1946 Mediterranean cruise would have been the Focke Wulf FW-190A-8T, with more subdued ocean camo. Notice the Hungarian Ho-229? The SU-25 camo LA-9? The USAAC 20th FG Meteor? A Mitsubishi Zero 52C for technology exchange with their German friends?
20230608_193046.jpg
How about the Iceland based Revell Ag. 1/72 Arado E.555 Luftwaffe bomber? Whaddya think?
20230608_190425.jpg20230608_190404.jpg20230608_193223.jpg
Ty Stevens is having a battle with Polar Lights re-issue of their awful Godzilla kit, then effortlessly assembles a Bandai 1/144 Star Wars Emcon T-65 X-Wing fighter during the meeting.
20230608_190341.jpg
Other Surgeons look on in rapt adoration!

In other club news, our next contest will be 6 April 2024. It will be in the same cozy, snug location it was this year. I hope Ron can keep from setting his entries on fire in the galley next year!

IPMS Fort Crook will present their next show 23 March 2024.
IPMS Alexander Lippisch' contest will be a week after SurgiCon in the generous space at the Jones County Fairgrounds.

That's all for this overview! Happy Modeling!

Thursday 22 June 2023 Club meeting post:
Under a steaming Midwestern summer sky the Plastic Surgeons gather once more. A new visitor, Dave came by to sample our Model Mirth.
20230622_185741.jpg20230622_185759.jpg20230622_185810.jpg20230622_185852.jpg20230622_185905.jpg20230622_185954.jpg20230622_190005.jpg20230622_190024.jpg20230622_190740.jpg
Don's been productive! My opinion is that the Archer is particularly beautiful! The Nordic berserker is cool. Her giant sword is amazing, and who doesn't appreciate an inviting Pirate skipper? I know I do! Don buys these on eBay. Based on the price, he's pretty sure they are bootleg busts of the original sculptor's work. Don starts with acrylic paint and finishes with oils that are the same color, so his figures finish like oil paint, but use less oil and cure more quickly.

20230622_190041.jpg20230622_190055.jpg20230622_190750.jpg
George has been "studying" under Don's experienced eye. "You can't come to paint lessons all these times and have nuthin' to show." George brings his in-progress Aztec warrior bust. Look how clean George's paint is. Very cool!
20230622_190346.jpg20230622_190346.jpg20230622_190354.jpg20230622_190358.jpg
Ray brings Academy's 1/35 Afrika Korps Panzer II. This is a model of the little tank that ended up at Aberdeen. The Link & Length tracks didn't give Ray much trouble. He's pleased with the Academy kit.

20230622_190403.jpg

Colton added a commander figure to his 1/35 Dwagon Panther F. Colton is trying foil as tarps. Some remain skeptical, but no one knows everything, right?
20230622_190409.jpg20230622_190429.jpg20230622_190542.jpg
Joachim's Tamiya 1/48 Ki-46 in progress. Joachim says this is a cursed model. Broken landing gear, canopy troubles and paint issues have plagued him all through his build. Tamiya's 1/48 Humber 7-tonne British armored car is conversely going together really well. I think Joachim said this was the Dragon 1/72 M-4 Sherman. The detail in this scale is excellent.

Young Ty Stevens has chosen a vintage Lindberg Jolly Roger Pirate ship to build for a piratey friend. He plans to rig the ship and display her under sail. I referred Ty to Tim's USS Constitution build thread for reference.

20230622_190239.jpg20230622_190244.jpg20230622_190727.jpg
Jose' continues his commentary on how many after-market parts can be bought and put on a model and does that much expense really improve the model? I continue to remember Greg's advice on that subject. "Every time you add an aftermarket part to a build, you create the possibility of additional flaws."
IMG951037.jpgIMG951036.jpgIMG951032.jpg
Speaking of Greg Metge, Way down Florida-way, He built Hasegawa's 1/48 Republic P-47D razorback Thunderbolt. George Preddy jr.'s original "Cripes-a-Mighty".
A tidy model, if I do say so myself!
20230622_061841.jpg
The finished Ron's Bunnies vignette made it's club debut. They got some laughs. That was exactly what I hoped for!

I want to say something about dedication.

We were at supper at Fazoli's and Teresa noticed Ray's shirt sleeve was wet. It turns out Ray had been injured in a cat/gravity mishap on Wednesday. The Man was bleeding like a stuck pig! We went to the parking lot to see if I could bind Ray's wound. It was about a 2" tear in his right arm. Chemo comes with blood thinners. Makes your skin more delicate and your blood runs out in greater volume. Ray's sure did!

I'm positive the sight of my trying to patch Ray up was perhaps the most grisly scene the Fazoli's parking lot has seen in some time! We had napkins and black electrical tape as emergency first aid materials. The young people at the restaurant became concerned and came to help with additional supplies. They went above and beyond so I could help my wounded friend. I finally got the bleeding stopped.
Ray never winced or griped the whole time I was working on him. Ray was worried about us getting his blood on our hands.
Teresa went to rinse out Ray's shirt.

I insisted we take Ray to see a regular Doc after my meager Corpsman's efforts, or maybe better, home to relax and recoup.
"No. I want to go to the Meeting. I'm ok." was all Ray-Ray wanted. I wanted to put his arm in a sling so he wouldn't bang the bandage.
He refused. "I'm all right."

During the meeting I kept a good, close eye on Ray. I wasn't sure he wouldn't go to leaking again, even though I watch a lot of MASH.
We stayed for Show n' Tell as usual. We took Ray home afterwards without further mishap or casualty.

I find it rare indeed when the fellowship of friends and model makers means more to a Man than his comfort or perhaps safety as well.
I called to check on Ray Friday night. He got some actual medical supplies, fluids and was doing better.

In his stoic, tough-old bird way Ray said "I would rather go anywhere than the damn hospital. I spend enough time in those places. Thanks for everything, Chris."

If that isn't dedication to your hobby, I cain't say what is.
Thanks again for looking in!
