2023 PLASTIC SURGEON MEETING POSTS

6 July Surgeon meeting post:
I will comment that Friday knocked the stuffin's out of me, so it this seem less jocular than normal, that's why.
20230706_185757.jpg20230706_185802.jpg20230706_190144.jpg20230706_172843.jpg

Our voyage began at Ray's house. After ascertaining for certain that Ray-Ray wasn't "leaking" anywhere, he showed me the progress he's made on his 1/48 Monogram B-24D Liberator. The Lib was not ready for transport to a club meeting yet, so it stayed in Lakewood.
Colton is building a 1/35 King Tiger-like substance. Jagdpanther lower hull running gear and a Sherman turret.
I wish him luck.
20230706_184913.jpg20230706_184925.jpg20230706_184931.jpg
Joe finished his 1/35 Tamiya JSDF Armored car. His unusual bullet-proof winder treatment is beyond reproach.
20230706_184949.jpg20230706_185001.jpg20230706_185010.jpg20230706_185036.jpg20230706_185019.jpg
Francisco completed a 1/35 Tami-Leri Crusader III. Italeri plastic with a Tamiya figure marketed by the Japanese. "Frank" will build just about anything and build it well! He comments the kit fit and built without much fuss. His results are irrefutable!
Kurt could not resist photo-bombing the Crusader. I hope General Montgomery understands. God's Truth!
20230706_185748.jpg20230706_185049.jpg20230706_185100.jpg20230706_185118.jpg
Ronnie Schultz re-habbed the 1/12 scale AMT '57 Chebby. He made the straight axle and front leaf springs for his Gasser conversion. Ron complains that many of the parts on the Big Bel Aire are "too small" to make or add. "Really. Too Small?"

20230706_191311.jpg
Jose' arrives with a big box of BIG Army Men! Well, knights, Spacemen, superheroes and cowboys too! Hoe cool is that?! Remember when toys didn't care about any kind of narrative?
20230706_185218.jpg20230706_185230.jpg20230706_185203.jpg20230706_185242.jpg20230706_185248.jpg20230706_185254.jpg20230706_185303.jpg20230706_185525.jpg
Men of Culture, we gather at the feet of the Master, yet again. My big buddy Don has evidently been VERY happy! His African Princess is stunning! The Piratess Captain is very thought provoking and her bodice is cast as a separate part! Observe, please the skin tones, curves, shadows and shading. Yes, obviously there are boobs, but please, look beyond the objects. See the artwork, skill and attention to detail!

Yes, there are tan lines.

Look at how colourful the red crested Macaw is.

Whatever.

Let me try again.

Look guys! TITTIES!!

20230706_185839.jpg
Since Don's Angels don't have legs or waists, it seemed fitting for me to bring the Butt Crack.

My finished 1/700 TLAR Models Gaffney, SC Peachoid water tower made her meeting debut. This was the second meeting in a row that I didn't bring a boat or teeny ship model. My Yankee model club brethren seemed non-plussed about my newest/oldest finished 1/700 scale project of a Southern Icon.
That being said, it is not an easy thing to follow Don's big Busts at a meeting (stop that giggling!) This is a family show, Geezo!
Or it was.
No. It truly NEVER was! :yipee::lol::yipee:

Thanks for looking in again!

Fantastic triage work Chris! Ray is a tough old bird, and model meeting would be better than the hospital any day of the week!
The only blood that frightens me is my own. I only did what was needed at the time. I am specially trained.

17 August 2023 Meeting post.
After a 1 month meeting hiatus, we picked up Ray and grandson Colton and motored off to Ankeny for the Club meeting.
We had supper at the Ankeny Fazoli's and NOBODY "sprang a leak" this time. For the first time in a long time, good ol' Kevin Nelson carried himself in his own car to a club meeting too! Bravo Brave Kevin!!
It was otherwise a rather lightly attended meeting. The Victors of San Marcos (Joe/Jimmy, Aimee and Ross) were still recovering from the pestilence they also found in Texas.

We passed on the news of Don's Memorial service date and time to those that don't use their email very much.
20230817_192710.jpg20230817_192740.jpg20230817_192710 (2).jpg
After the untimely passing of Plastic Surgeons plank-owner, revered model maker and great friend Don Gordon Barry, it was a delight to see Kevin in person and improving!

20230817_185049.jpg20230817_185056.jpg20230817_185112.jpg20230817_185120.jpg20230817_185141.jpg
Ray Power's Takom 1/35 Panzer IIB. Ray did a nice job on his "Eine kleine panzerwagen" and still took time to replace the back deck on his house even with all his trips to the hospital for treatments. The Takom kit comes with both the Panzer IIA and IIB models in it.
Colton asks "Does A come before B?"
I quipped "It is was a damn good thing school is about to start again, Bub. You need it!!"

Another Colton Quotable Quote this trip: "Truck drivers use two GPS units." Heaven alone know why that was relevant or important.
Silly kid!
20230817_185420.jpg20230817_185431.jpg20230817_185438.jpg20230817_185446.jpg20230817_185453.jpg
"I boiught a tank model that ends in Super." :smack:
Didja now?!
Hobbyboss 1/35 M-26 Super Pershing Korean war era kit. I found it ironic Colton's tank had an "A" on it. Ray and Colton cannot reccommend this kit. all the running gear had to chopped off and made to fit the running gear and hull. Evidently hobbyboss individual track links are brittle and don't fit the drive sprocket. Colton finished the Pershing after Grampa Ray kicked it's communist ass.
20230817_185505.jpg
Nate Stevens Special Hobby 1/72 Royal Navy Fairey Barracuda Mk.II Interesting (?!?) engineering, plastic that doesn't take glue well. This from the guy that never has any trouble with RS models plastic. Hey, things don't always go your way. I'm sure Nate will get it whipped.
20230817_193534.jpg20230817_193546.jpg20230817_193557.jpg20230817_193613.jpg
Mark Johnson's Deal's Wheels dune buggy. The mod's Mark did to the "Egg-plane of Car Models" are consistent with his fine model skills and attention to detail and ability to improvise. The generator drive belt is layers of electrical tape, carved into a vee profile. Take a good close look at the bumper car metal flake finish. Mark made a tri-fecta" of Deal's Wheels for this weekend's NNL show in Grimes.
20230817_192246.jpg20230817_192548.jpg20230817_192420.jpg
Jose' unboxed some more of his models from his move from California. Monogram 1/48 Grumman Avenger, Hawk Models 1/48 Ryan PT-20 in Mexican Air Force livery with the accurate Mexican AF wooden prop! 1/72 Me-262-a1 AND!
20230817_192616.jpg20230817_192213.jpg20230817_192616 (2).jpg20230817_192235.jpg

The Final Countdown "Splash the Zeroes" dogfight in 1/144. The movie shows Victory 202 in for a gun kill, then VF-84 Squadron C/O Fox Fallon in Victory 200 firing a sidewinder, then Victory 202 & 203 forming up after their lopsided merge with the "Zeroes".

Jolly Roger's F-14 Tomcats were actually filmed at NAS Key West for this scene. The sidewinder launch is file footage.
Jose's portrayal is accurate, but the clear stands for his Tomcats are broken. I hoped to see this done with Eggplanes one day. This is really cool!

The club discussed having a meeting on a train in Boone. It's a pic-nic car. bring your own food & drinks. We aren't interested because it is a really long drive, who knows how much it costs to ride said train, and Teresa's work day begins very early on Friday.
Plus, Heaven only know what P-47 pilot may choose our steam locomotive as a strafing target! None for me, thanks.

I'm out of pictures to post so I must be out of story to tell.

See you around!

31 August Club meeting post:
It's been quite a week, at least here on the sultry prairie. Apologies for the tardiness of this post.
Let's begin this story with the Panzer 35t Greg built. No, the hurricane wasn't shrieking when he built it.
IMG951130.jpgIMG951131.jpgIMG951132.jpgIMG951135.jpg
"Not my best effort. Built and finished in 10 days. I was inspired by the book noted here. ("Blood, Dust and Snow" by Friedrich Sandler. cr)
It's a diary found in a garage sale in Germany. It only went as far as the Russian front, ending before Kursk. Most of his time was in a 35t A few months ia a PzKpw III but then the diary ended. I think he did too. " The un-pictured Greg lives in Florida.
20230831_190914.jpg20230831_190928.jpg20230831_190836.jpg20230831_190818.jpg20230831_190748.jpg
Surgeons in attendance.
20230831_190652.jpg20230831_190624.jpg20230831_190648.jpg20230831_190642.jpg
Joe, Aimee and Ross went to San Marcos in August to the IPMS National Convention. See here 1 of each scale. 1/35 Stridswagen, 1/48 Tamiya Humber IV scout car and 1/72 M4A1 Israeli Sherman. Joe tells a story of entering the nice little Israeli Sherman in a category he was almost certain would be less than heavily entered. 1/72 Armor 1945 to 1953; Other. Not Allied! Not Axis! Other! See! National show winner! How clever is that? The Swedish S-tank was entered in 1/35 Armor Basic Build and fared well. I don't know what Ross entered, but both Ross and Joe ran afoul of Wuhan Flu in TX and came back very sick. It's surprising vaccinated and boosted folk were afflicted so, is it not? Aimee was unaffected. Lucky Aimee!
20230831_190904.jpg
Ray brought his Hobbyboss 1/48 Grumman Avenger TBF. He's almost as happy with this Chinese model as he was with Colton's Super Pershing.
A fiddly, tedious model that may be the CCP knock-off of the Accurate Miniatures Avenger kit everyone loves so well. Grandson Colton brought his Tiger I lower hull and diorama base he picked up at Don's house. He says another "Fwankentigul" is being built and states, with some alacrity, that every 1/35 Tiger I model kit fits the same.
Ah, the bliss of youth.

Jose' comes by with the best stuff to play with!
20230831_192613.jpg20230831_193731.jpg20230831_193812.jpg
Remember these cool Tamiya remote control tanks from 1970. He almost got these high mileage gun-slingers to operate. Really! It was close!
Still, a lot of fun to see the more complex toys of our earlier childhood.
20230831_190703.jpg20230831_190722.jpg
Loren Pine brought a box of 1/72 and 1/700 models he collected. Methodical Loren marks each box with price, including shipping and where he bought it from. This SS Models 3D printed1/700 USN Light Cruiser was marked USS St. Louis, CL-49. This is indeed a 1/700 St. Louis class light cruiser, but not the WWII CL-49. Those silly Chineses put Loren's model ship in the wrong box. This is in fact the 1904 USS St. Louis. These are PRICEY! That and I would rather have resin to work with. This model comes with incredibly vague instructions for a very complex photo-etch install. Yeah. None for me, thanks.
20230831_190815.jpg
Nathan Stevens brought his Dornier Do-217 (?) and his 1/72 Revell Halifax Mk.II. We learned about yellow Royal Air Force anti-icing paste that was applied to the leading edges of bombers, rather than yellow paint as we once may have thought. Nate was also delighted with the number of Eduard 1/72 Me-109F model kits Joe brought back from Texas for him. The Eduard kits seemed unphased by any virus'.

Teresa's early work schedule bade us head home before the rest of the Club business, as it usually does. Evidently it was decided to name the Best of Figures award in memory of Don. It's as if the Club hardly knew him at all. Don built 100 times more German Armor (with crewmen) than just figures. A special Don Barry award for Best of World War II German Vehicle would have been much more fitting.

If you aren't there, you can't vote. Whaddygonnado?
20230831_211934.jpg
Kevin Nelson and I made a deal to add 2 of his Fokkers to my collection of built kits from model makers I admire and respect.

Thanks for looking in again!

I had one of the motorized tanks as well. It was a M-42 Duster. How I just knew the designation I have no clue. I could see it in my head and the designation was right there with it. (double checked to make sure)

YUP!
My motorized M-41 Walker Bulldog, adorned with a sloppy "The Haunted Tank" used to run over everything 1/35 "Nazi" many Moons ago.
It wasn't remote control, so it had to chased, caught and turned around. I emptied every C-cell flashlight in the house.
It was all fun & games until one night the power went out. Mom was non-plussed!

image000000(8).jpg
Teresa finished her Roku sloop-rigged yacht. The little dingy with oars is exceptionally cute!! I consulted just a bit on rigging and the set of her sails.

14 September 2023 Meeting post:
First, was an order of Business. Dane Jerisk and club treasurer George Stevens revealed what Don Barry's family had decided to do with the money from the Don-a-tions gleaned from the members, friends and loved ones as we attempted to save as many of Don's models, busts and kits from the big dumpster as possible.

It is the wish of Don's people that a fund be established to provide a special award in Don's name at our annual contest for as long as the fund will support it.
Total Don-a-tions came to 1,855.00 so far. The Jerisk family donated the $$ to the IPMS Plastic Surgeons Club. A very unexpected and generous act indeed. A suggestion was made that The Don Award be for Best German Subject, but I can see how complex that might be for a club our size to evaluate every German subject to choose the most fitting model. The scope of the Don Award could do with some narrowing, I think.

Most of our membership applauded the job I undertook with Don's model stuff. My good friend asked me to do him a favor. I gave him my word I would. I never did do one special thing.

20230914_185106.jpg20230914_185126.jpg20230914_185157.jpg20230914_185207.jpg20230914_185219.jpg 20230914_185056.jpg20230914_185312.jpg
Francisco built Tamiya's 1/48 P-38F/G Lightning. This airplane is Tom Lamphier's P-38G Lightning "Miss Virginia" as she appeared in April of 1943.
This model depicts the Yamamoto Mission aircraft faithfully. Francisco did quite a job on his model and put some extra time into the history of the mission, including a map of the Solomon Islands showing the 1,000 mile course the Lightning drivers followed to intercept Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto and vice admiral Ugaki's G4M Betty bombers on their inspection tour. Not just an excellent build but an interesting detailed bit of history too!
20230914_192140.jpg20230914_192147.jpg20230914_192133.jpg20230914_192205.jpg
Ross womped up an aging Hasegawa 1/48 Me-109F-2 (I think) as a basic build for the San Marcos National convention. Hans Dobrich of JG-5 if memory serves. He did this unusual Northern Europe camo scheme to do something a little different. I think it worked out well.
20230914_192544.jpg
Carlton was having a Badger Airbrush dilemma. He bought a new airbrush from Harbor Freight to try out. Joe and Ross advise Mr. Burger that Badger has a lifetime warranty on their paint spitters. You have to send it in, but in a couple of weeks time, your Badger returns home overhauled and good as new. Stay tuned to see how the HF airbrush paints while Carlton's Badger is at the airbrush spa.
20230914_192615.jpg20230914_192638.jpg20230914_192805.jpg20230914_193058.jpg
Joachim has been busy, as usual. Revell's 1/72 Leopard I Bruckenleger qualifies as a vintage kit these days. It still builds into a convincing miniature of the Bundwehr's Bridgelayer. AFV Club's 1/35 Australian Centurion is in progress too. I think Joe says this version is the Korean War version. AFV's Centurion has operating suspension with dinky metal springs so the running gear will deflect and rebound. AFV Club's model looks pretty nifty!
20230914_193736.jpg20230914_193730.jpg
Ron Schultz found three super rare Ford Promo models way down in Oskaloosa. '64 Galaxie convertible, 1965 Thunderbird and 1965 Galaxie sedan, all in primo condition. Treasure to a car model aficionado such as Ron!
20230914_193830.jpg20230914_193837.jpg20230914_193844.jpg
Don made this vignette for Nate Stevens, since he talked about building the 21st Century Toys1/32 Macchi 205 Veltro. The scene depicts 2 Italian fighter pilots carrying on about their daring exploits following a long day of ferocious aerial combat.
I know Don had lots more chianti and brandy bottles for his project than he used. I cain't say where they came from. Some Nut must have cast them for him. Aimee & Joe delivered this piece to Nate without mishap or damage.
20230914_193913.jpg
Don made a plaster (?) 1/35 "wishing well". I don't know what he had in mind for it. I made a mold from his Master. This is the first casting from that mold. The plaster Master didn't survive the molding process in one piece, but the mold is easy to pour and the castings are stellar. This cool little well will be included in the TLAR 1/35 German Army stowage set when the 2.0 mold is made and improved castings are produced. The horse collar will be getting an upgrade as well. You know, once all my other model ideas, requests and projects are completed.
20230914_220346.jpg
In other news, A 1/1 scale bomb has arrived. This is a 100 pound practice bomb found on the shore of Lake Michigan. It may have come from NAS Glenview, USS Sable or USS Wolverine released by a nugget US Navy Dauntless pilot. The waters of the big lake have washed most of the plaster ballast from it. I Don-a-ted a ridiculous sum to bring this US Navy relic home to roost.

I ran out of pictures again, so this installment of Plastic Surgeons narrative must be complete.
Thanks again for looking in!

Tell Francisco Miss V is a beaut! :vgood:
Wilco! I eagerly await the Man-Scale (1/72) version of this same airplane model!
20230924_141245.jpg20230924_141931.jpg
While I cast the New 1/350 Interceptor 232 mold, I hate to waste any expensive material. Ron will be getting a few more 1/24 Squirrels and several armor modelers have requested 1/35 German MG ammo boxes and pouches. I made this mold for Don. I will do my best to fill in for him in his absence. Ronnie is mum about why he wants so many friggin' squirrels.

I missed the most recent club meeting. I had a malady I didn't want to chance passing on to Ray during our drive.
I had "care packages" for Curt, Ross, Ron and George. Fortunatley they don't eat anything and will still be available for delivery on the next go-round.

NOW!
Plastic Surgeons club founder, Greg Metge has been using his improving eye-bobbers to get " back in the saddle" model wise.
Meet Rolf and Ralph!

This was a 3D print I bought from an Etsy seller. I painted and presented to a peticularly worthy co-worker last year. You guys remember?
Well, I can't have a ruptured fluck bleeding toxic fluid all over people and funiture. now can I?
Drilling, draining and refilling a second Fying Fluck to prep it for molding and casting has been underway. It was planned to pour RTV today, BUT!
20231001_143018.jpg
It occurred to me that no Fying Fluck should have such a vapid, vacant, expression on it's face. Giving a Fying Fluck is not an act of well-mannered Folk. Adding mean eyes and eyebrows should set the proper tone for Tara Lynn's workplace award replacement.

This critter is a cross between a Fox and a (bath)Duck(ie). Who can say what color such a thing should be?
Tara Lynn's will be a repeat of Tamiya clear yellow/orange over chrome. The Golden Fying Fluck, 2.0.

What if your Fying Fluck was based in North Afrika? Elmendorf AFB in Alaska? Is He RAF material? The Malta brick wall camo, Perhaps?
Soviet Aviation? Meeting the Allies in the French Bocage'? Intercepting Lancaster bombers at night over the Reich? Manfred Von Drake?
Imagine all the possibilities!

In other Surgeon news, citing a workplace conflict, long suffering Contest Chairman Joe Lotz has stepped down form his contest duties.
Jose' Gonzalez has taken up the SurgiCon mantle, or chair as it were, in Joe's stead. Good Luck, Senor Gonzalez!

That's all the Surgeon News I know about for now!

Chrome. Chrome! CHROME. CHROME!!
Results like this just aren't that hard to achieve. Thanks Frank, for sharing your technique. Gold coming right up!
Note: This is the only Fying Fluck that comes with a warranty and an upgrade. This was an award in 2022. It should impress!

NOW!

Teresa asked to buy a Fying Fluck to lift the spirits of her Boss, Hope at Hy-Vee. She had a recent death in her family.

Pink? PINK!
My Sweetie will make a cool base for her own presentation. Her money is no good at TLAR Models.

Thanks for tuning in!
