2023 PLASTIC SURGEON MEETING POSTS

2023 is off to a rousing beginning! Our Club Christmas party occurred last night at the Old Chicago in Ankeny.

Not too many club members came to celebrate the beginning of a fresh year.
20230105_190130.jpg20230105_190107.jpg20230105_190219.jpg20230105_190233.jpg 20230105_190256.jpg
We picked up Don Barry and Ray Powers. 2 of our club "Plank-owners" that had been absent for some time. Dave Bettis came. Hey Bob Haageman and Ty Stevens and Smilin' Bob Maloy. Young Trennis Stevens adds his 2-cents worth.
20230105_190321.jpg20230105_190317.jpg20230105_190510.jpg20230105_193201.jpg
Tootie and Curt Young, with Joachim Lotz. Carlton & Missus Burger with Aimee Wright. Jack and Terry, And Jose'.
Conspicuously absent were George Stevens, Ron Schultz, Ross Petra, Francisco Melendez and Kevin Nelson. Kevin was damaged in a snow shoveling mishap and Ron was unwell. It seems our Merry Band is shrinking. Not all personalities gel well together. Things change.
It was fun to get Don and Ray out of their houses to come play. I sat next to Don at supper. He is a little hard of hearing, so I asked him if this was his good ear. A resounding "Huh?!" confirmed my suspicions.

Joe insisted on mixing business with Christmas and talking about our last contest and our upcoming show. I'm sure glad he did!
Without constantly being told about the next contest, I might never have known any better! Jose will sponsor an award for Vintage Models, built out of box.

Supper was pretty good for a change at Old Chicago. Our smaller group was easier to serve and they weren't very busy. Our server was absolutely outstanding. Teresa and I had a $37.00 bill, but the food was dandy. Historically the server had seemed unskilled/inattentive and the food was lousy. A nice change!

The gift exchange at the Christmas Party varies. Some are old Turds you want to go away and some are truly Model Treasures!
20230105_194544.jpg20230105_194552.jpg20230105_194704.jpg20230105_194706.jpg20230105_194715.jpg20230105_194729.jpg
Dave likes old-tool models. He builds almost everything as long as it is vintage. Club President Nate Stevens got REALLY excited about his Richard Petty '71 NASCAR Charger kit.
20230105_194746.jpg20230105_194809.jpg
Poor Ray. He drew my 1/72 MiG-A-Palooza. 2 MiG-21 kits and a MiG-27 Flogger. Sorry Ray!
20230105_194817.jpg
Aimee seemed well pleased with her new Moto-tool and bit sets! A most excellent Christmas gift for sure!
20230105_194854.jpg
I'm not sure Joachim knows who Dick Dastardly was or why that kit is so much fun. Did they have "The Wacky Races" in Germany where he grew up?
20230105_195100.jpg
"Extincke Species". The Accurate Miniatures 1/48 Grumman TBM-3D radar-equipped Avenger for my Sweetie.
20230105_194638.jpg
Model-Claus bestowed a 1/144 Gundam on me. :bm:
20230105_194927.jpg
I took one more picture of Curt & Tootie. They are just SO Damn cute!
Thanks for looking in!

Still looks like you all have fun Chris. Much better than my local club that has become rather worthless. Have not bothered to go to a meeting since early last year and probably won't ever again. Not worth the time and hassle.

Chris,

Good for you and Teresa on the gifts.
I expect to see the Gundam at our show in April, along with the Moonbat.

There was a meeting tonight. The weather cheered up enough for us to go without worry. We picked up Ray and his Grandson Colton and went.
Pictures to come!

Weather Thursday was pretty fair for March here on the windswept prairie. We picked up Ray Powers and his "shadow" Grandson Colton, and headed off to Hobbytown Ankeny for our first club meeting in quite a while.
20230302_193331.jpg 20230302_184648.jpg20230302_184422.jpg
Ray is much improved since his original, bleak diagnosis and is up and around with only the help of a cane. Ray's 1/48 Academy Spitfire has the old Eduard backwards decals. The kind that you peel the carrier film off of. He recommends throwing these decals in the garbage and using something else.
20230302_184448.jpg20230302_184613.jpg20230302_184412.jpg
His own Panther G has a mix of Panter & Tiger I road wheels. Ray used Fruil tracks on his Panzer V. His shurtzen are plastic sheet. Ray isn't a fan of photo-etch so much.
20230302_184717.jpg20230302_184451.jpg20230302_184630.jpg20230302_184637.jpg
Colton is an enthusiastic little guy and likes to build models with his Grampa Ray. Colton's Panther F schmalturm was assembled from a Dragon kit and the bones of many leftover Dragon Tiger 1 and Panter sprues. Colton is rehabbing an Oldsmobile Cutlass racing car as well.
20230302_184724.jpg20230302_184803.jpg20230302_193511.jpg
Some of the guys.
20230302_190311.jpg20230302_190317.jpg
Ross brought his Hasegawa 1/48 Messerschmitt Me-109G-10.
20230302_184100.jpg20230302_184108.jpg20230302_184116.jpg20230302_184139.jpg
Ronnie Schultz rebuilt the interior on a 1977 AMT Chevy "Vantasy" model. The graphics on the outside have stood the test of time quite well.

20230302_211328.jpg20230302_212403.jpgRon wanted more squirrels. I'm readying molds anyway.
20230302_184211.jpg20230302_184228.jpg20230302_184234.jpg20230302_184252.jpg20230302_184302.jpg20230302_184308.jpg20230302_184316.jpg
Hey Bob Hageman's cars. The Corvette used to be blue. Attempting a convertible top from wire and rod for Blowfeld's Vette.
The Gran Prix proves Hey Bob knows his way around a car model.

Dad's Mustang and the 1/72 Heinkel Seebanshee were my contributions to tonight's meeting but you guys have seen plenty of those pictures.

20230302_193256.jpg20230302_193300.jpg20230302_193317.jpg20230302_193320.jpg
Jose brought several of his models for our appreciation. It turns out Jose' builds 1/48 as well! Mooey Bwaino! The Syrian Zerstorer is a Monogram model.
20230302_193339.jpg
I think Nate wanted to talk about his airplane models, but the oft repeated Contest Instruction took place instead. Odd for the club President to snubbed in such a fashion. Jose' had a great idea for a vintage airplane model award for the club. I hope it goes really well.

Teresa works early in the morning on Fridays, so we usually blast off at 8:00 PM. We missed the rest of the Contest stuff that we had been told many times before anyway.

Nate is building an Italeri 1/72 Junkers JU-86. He commented he was in window-masking hell. The Fujimi 1/72 Stuka looks promising, but again, myriad little tiny winders to mask. Nate makes a fine airplane model, so I know he will prevail!

That's all I have to say about that.

30 March Surgeon's meeting post:
Our merry band of model miscreants gathered for a small show n' tell and then a final pep talk before our Saturday, April 1st. (NoFoolin'!) contest.
If memory serves, 23 of our Members were in attendance. Prominently missing were Curt Young, Jack & Terry, Dave Bettis, Kevin Nelson and Don Barry. It was good to see Webb, Nate (the OTHER white Nate) McCoy and Mike Rasmussen!
Mark Johnson joined the club last night. Mark is good guy and makes a fine "Shiny" (model car). Who is that masked man?!
20230330_185936.jpg20230330_185931.jpg20230330_185910.jpg20230330_185856.jpg20230330_193550.jpg20230330_185901.jpg
The guys asked after Don. I felt I couldn't share deeply personal details I know. I encourage anyone who calls Don "Friend" to have the courage call him up, stop by, or email.

How about some models?!
20230330_193727.jpg20230330_185844.jpg
Ronnie Schultz is rehabbing '60's 1/24 Stock Cars. I appreciate the amount of work it takes to disassemble, strip and rebuild an ancient model.
Ron does a lot of this sort of thing. Some of there look like them ol' JoHan kits! Check out what those sell for and you can see why Ronnie does what he does! He seemed delighted with his resin squirrels. I threw in some Holley carbs, bottles, a feisty frog & Weiand racing air cleaners for good measure.

20230330_190154.jpg20230330_190201.jpg20230330_190208.jpg
Ray's grandson Colton built himself a Tamiya 1/35 Easy 8 Sherman. I donated a started Tamya 1/35 Jagdpanther to Colton's model tank stable along with a baloney story about the emotional trauma I endured when my step-son picked out a (sob, sniff) TANK model! (booo-hooo-hooo huhu!) Now my healing process can begin. :yipee::lol:
20230330_190234.jpg20230330_190316.jpg20230330_190322.jpg
Grampa Ray built a Dragon 1/35 Stug IV ausf Frankenstein. Composed of wayward sprues of Wehrmacht armor parts, It came out pretty nice!
Ray is recovering well from his metastatic bone cancer.
20230330_192221.jpg20230330_190026.jpg20230330_193424.jpg
Trennis Stevens has a Hasegawa 1/72 original tool F-100D Super Sabre well on it's way. In an act of Stevens family solidarity, his Dad is making a pair of Hobbyboss 1/72 F-86 Sabres. They look like F-models to me. President Stevens says the kit decals work really well. His use of vintage Microscale decals wint a lil' less well. It is odd to see a Nathan Stevens airplane model with no prop.

Next up! Jose'!

Jose' Alejandro Raul Luis Gonzalez Pulido joined our wild bunch after a move from California.
20230330_191733.jpg
This kid will build just about anything! I would expect nothing less from a guy with THAT $25.00 moniker!

20230330_190349.jpg20230330_190418.jpg20230330_191654.jpg
Hasegawa 1/72 F-4F Luftwaffe and Monogram's 1/48 P-40B dressed up as an AVG Hawk 81-A.

20230330_190431.jpg20230330_190439.jpg20230330_190445.jpg20230330_190531.jpg
Accurate Miniatures 1/48 USMC F3F-1. Not quite the Gulfhawk! The Wildcat's dad!

20230330_191827.jpg20230330_191913.jpg
Accurate Miniatures 1/48 P-39Q "Cobra 1" 1946 Thompson trophy racer, sans flaps. Jack Woolam's airplane. I imagine the Airacobra was pretty speedy in the racing environment.
20230330_191619.jpg20230330_191639.jpg
Argentine Navy D-1 ARA Hercules. A batch 42 FFG late of the Royal Navy. This is her Falklands War fit. The Dragon kit included the PEE you see here.

The rest of the meeting progressed into the predictable Contest last-minute instruction that most of us have heard before.
A bit of good news! Our registration forms have changed into a more IPMS-like format. After the confusing, time consuming, absolute DISASTER registration was last year, this seems a logical bit of evolution.

Dane and I were BURIED last year. I won't be doing registration this year. I'm planning to help place models, have fun and blab with model guys while some other poor bastard beats his brains out with no relief.

I hope for a decent turn out. The venue is at best, off the beaten path with few attractions nearby. This year our awards are American-made in Wisconasin! I hope they don't seem less than impressive. Our show is the same weekend as the big contest in Indianapolis.
Thanks again for looking in!

Thursday 14 April Meeting post:
There was a meeting at Ankeny Hobbytown. We had one of members in the ER with a cardiac malady. My Sweetie and I chose to go visit the hospital and cheer up this Surgeon. The needs of the One exceeded the needs of the Many this night.
We found our friend in a regular room. Comfy and looking forward to an examination the following day.

Hospitals has changed some since my last visit.
Few model supplies can be found in the cabinets and carts about the ward these days. No 'gun barrels", no scale camouflage netting. no paint mixing media. Gone are the days of blowing up a surgical glove to make a balloon to play balloon vollleyball in the rooms.
Modern silicone gloves only inflate so far before they pop. This vexes me. Nothing to play with.

We left our friend in better spirits than we found him in and returned home.

Good for you, with what we've been dealing with lately I know just having a visit does wonders for one's spirits.

27 April 2023 Meeting post.
I have been remiss. I have worked every night this week and I did other stuff besides the meeting post.
We picked up Ray and Colton and headed to Hobbytown Ankeny. The weather was fair and warm enough for Teresa not to freeze her lil' yarbles off FINALLY!
20230427_183614.jpg20230427_183622.jpg20230427_183628.jpg20230427_183636.jpg20230427_183815.jpg
Ray brought along a 1/48 Accurate Miniatures P-51A. I know damn well this is actually an A-36 Apache. You can tell by the dive brakes, Silly!
Even after his "death sentence" and on-going recovery, Ray-Ray still builds a nice model. Even if it is "old Man scale".
20230427_183652.jpg20230427_183659.jpg20230427_183706.jpg20230427_183735.jpg20230427_183726.jpg
Ray also presented a 1/35 T-80 in Ukraine service. If I remember correctly this one was bought from Crazy Artem's Used/Abandoned/Captured Russian Tank lot. It seems the T-80 had a rough go. It had Band-Aids all over it! :bm:
20230427_183752.jpg20230427_183758.jpg20230427_183804.jpg20230427_183810.jpg
Ray's Grandson, Colton bwought a 1/35 Tamiya Sherlman. Colton wikes doing stowage but he weft the filler caps of his Jewwy cans. :stinker:
20230427_191722.jpg20230427_192135.jpg20230427_192143.jpg20230427_194839.jpg20230427_192518.jpg
Bob Maloy came by with the 1973 Esci 1/6 scale BMW R75 and sidecar kit. A truly stunning build of a solid classic motorcycle model to be sure! Bob knows a little about this Scooter. He recently rode a 1967 6-volt BMW R-75 when the urge struck him. Joachim commented that BMW stands for Bavarian Manure Wagon (Wagen?!)
Bob brought the ancient (only compared to some!) decal sheet as provenance!

Among Car Model Builders there has been some excitement about AMT re-issues from Round 2. The 1958 and 1960 Ford Pick-ups are due to be re-issued. They have been reverse-engineered and modern molds tooled.
20230427_183835.jpg20230427_184039.jpg20230427_184244.jpg20230427_183914.jpg20230427_183924.jpg20230427_183937.jpg20230427_183944.jpg20230427_184033.jpg
Ronnie Schultz refinished his Original 1958 F-100 for the on-line promotion that celebrates Chinese communist's copies more of our original stuff for profit. The 1960 Ford Uni-body F-100 will still include the racecar trailer. Ron likes to refinish old automotive models and improve them. His old Stock Car models bear that out!
Note: Both 1/24 pick-up models were still held together with the original flat-head screws. That's VINTAGE right there!! I don't care who you are!
20230427_191040.jpg20230427_191644.jpg
Jose is putting a great many classic models together. His NCC-1710 USS Enterprise is aged, but not the origianal AMT model kit. I can tell by how the engine nacelles attach to the hull. Remember the sliding blocks that glued in to hold the nacelle struts to the inside of the main hull? :poop: I do.

One of Jose's other projects is 10 1/72 Heller T-6 Texan airplane models of the Mexican Air Force. HELLER!? No Kiddin'! Look through the magnifier and see how Jose modifies the Heller parts to fit his passion!

20230427_191105.jpg20230427_191226.jpg
Dave Bettis is building a 1/48 Tamiya M1A1 Abrams tank model. I checked on dave to see if he was ok. He usually builds "old turd models" so I wondered if he was overwhelmed by the fit and quality of Tamiya. Dave assures me he's fine.
Then, two, he bought the 1/48 Autoblinda armored car kit from the Supermodel 50th Anniversary dual kit. (now I'm not worried anymore!)

20230427_194540.jpg20230427_194554.jpg
Show and Tell wrapped up with the Monogram 1/72 B-52 Stratofortress Nate Stevens received as a dubious gift. Yes, my friends, It did have the "jet engine sound" motor in it. No longer. A nice, quiet, classic Monogram 1/72 BUFF will hang from the ceiling in Nate's 1/72 airplane model factory one day.
That's all for now!
Thanks again for looking in!

11 May 2023 Surgeon Meeting post:
20230511_181306.jpg20230511_181324.jpg20230511_181333.jpg20230511_181341.jpg20230511_181315.jpg
20230511_181348.jpg20230511_181354.jpg20230511_181403.jpg20230511_181412.jpg20230511_235458.jpg
Ron Schultz re-habbed Italeri's 1/24 1933 Cadillac V-16 and an unknown (to me) 1920's Lincoln V-12 and car model. These are obviously fitted out for the discerning Surfer! Ronnie used my resin frog in his '33 Cadillac Town Cabriolet limousine. What fun! The resin squirrel project went so well, now Ron wants bunnies. :bm:

20230511_181646.jpg20230511_181655.jpg20230511_181700.jpg20230511_181708.jpg20230511_181709.jpg20230511_181723.jpg20230511_181736.jpg20230511_181741.jpg20230511_181748.jpg
We carried Ray and Colton along to the meeting again. Ray's 1/48 Tamiya Spitfire Mk.I and in progress 1/35 Das Werk Kingtiger. Ray says the Tamiya Spitfire goes together with almost no fuss. NSM with the Das Werk kit. He is unhappy about the fit if the Takom plastic in the Kingtiger kit.
20230511_182956.jpg
Colton wanted some 1/35 stowage.
I decided to help young Colton "evolve" as a modeler. Beginning to work with resin parts seemed a next logical step. I dug up one of my original TLAR #417 kits, a 240 sanding stick, a black Sharpie marker and a water vessel and helped Colton black-mark and wet-sand one of the baskets in the kit. He did purty good for his first time! Remembering not to push to hard, keep the stick wet and let the sander do the work is most important. "Mistakes happen slower with these."

I remember being a 12-year old modeler. I remember older, more experienced Guys being generous with me. It's all on the Wheel...............

20230511_184232.jpg20230511_184251.jpg20230511_184259.jpg
"Hey Bob" Hageman brought some of his built racecar models for tips on construction. His buddy Dennis built a '66 Chevelle (?) model and hand-painted on the "Dennis the Menace" artwork. Bob is refinishing his friend's old car and asked if I could make decals of the artwork for him. He never asked me for anything before. Working on it for ya Bob!
I will probably go WAY overboard on his request. I usually do.
20230511_184535.jpg20230511_184412.jpg20230511_184418.jpg20230511_184422.jpg20230511_184432.jpg
Don Barry is back in the saddle! YAY!
Francisco has been picking Don up and bringing him to club meetings much in the same way we do with Ray and Colton.
His fondness for machine gunners extends into Allied subjects as well!
My big buddy has been building Yung Miniatures busts and is very impressed with the sculpting! Don has been tutoring George as away of passing on his experience.
20230511_184440.jpg20230511_184446.jpg20230511_184455.jpg20230511_184503.jpg
The Viking bust is impressive as well! One day soon I hope we can "Go out and play" again!
20230511_184522.jpg20230511_184527.jpg20230511_184530.jpg20230511_184514.jpg20230511_184530.jpg20230511_184518.jpg20230511_184549.jpg20230511_184555.jpg
Francisco? Oh Right! His 1/35 Dragon "Wirbelwind" from the withdraw from France in 1944 was very well executed!
I was particularly impressed with the expressions on his figures faces! Muy Excellante' Senor!
20230511_191148.jpg20230511_191235.jpg
Ross Petra brings another Kuhl 1/1 scale bit of history in the form of a "zeltbahn". The camo pattern is printed on both sides of the 1/4 of a tent. Buttons and button holes line the edges, so a guy could assemble 4 of these to make a proper zelt. There's a hole in the middle so it can be worn as a rain poncho (Smock! Smock!) The label reads "Deutches keidlung amt". (German clothing office)
Roscoe always brings something interesting!
