OK, what was wrong.

The wood won't split across the grain, but will split along the grain. The mold has the grain running the same direction as the steel bands. The bands were put around the block to keep it from cracking along the grain. Here is a block of wood I used with my floor jack the other day. Didn't have a piece of 2x4 so I grabbed this which was too thin and split along the grain. If it had some steel bands around it holding it together, it probably wouldn't have split.
