What I've been up to....

Outstanding...best work photos I could come up with is a server still running with all the hard drive lights flashing red.

Really great shots Warren, thank you for sharing these. That Brin would be an interesting subject!

That made my day MP!

Welcome!

So have you received your reward yet Warren. :rotf http://www.ctvnews.ca/mobile/canada/message-in-bottle-found-on-nova-scotia-s-sable-island-58-years-later-1.1676961

Yes and no, an editor from Woods Hole interviewed me first and sent a 1968 JFK half dollar for the reward. She wrapped the coin in some paper and sent it in an envelope (postage was $1.18). When it arrived, either a sorting machine somehow squeezed the coin out of the envelope or someone carefully sliced the envelope open and removed it. I suspect the latter!

So, no reward! Finding the bottle and the history was enough of a reward for me! It was neat to talk to this scientists grandson and granddaughter in-law over email! His grandson told me how he used to assemble these bottles for him, 1 cent for every 10 he completed! Some afternoons, he was able to make a dime!

Too bad on the half dollar. But like you said in the end the history part is what makes it worth it. Always interesting to see what gets uncovered during the winter on the beaches. I know here in Oregon some really interesting stuff shows up during the winter. Chinese pottery and Bee's wax shows up quite often. The State Archaeologists figure that a Spanish trade Galleon wrecked off the coast. I really want to get into Marine Archaeology instead of my normal landbased stuff.

That's cool! Does anyone ever find intact pottery or just pieces? I did take a course in underwater archeology for SCUBA many years ago. To do it properly, it is a long, painstaking process. The rewards are great but someone could easily spend a lifetime recording the findings and events from a single wreck!

Very interesting!

I'm not sure if any fully intact pieces have been found but I did find this report http://www.nagagroup.org/BeesWax/publications/2007Report.pdf Makes for some interesting reading. Seems that some fragments have been found in sites occupied by the local tribes. Cool that some were actually knapped into projectile points. Oh I can imagine that underwater work is quite a bit more difficult then surface work. We just gps everything we find now and the computer makes a map for us. Not sure if that is really feasible underwater.
