Tamiya Schwimmwagen 1/35...Update 10/17/14

Hi Guys,

This is the Tamiya Schwimmwagen in 1/35 scale. Great little kit, but I can't leave well enough alone, so I'm adding Aber PE, DEF off road tires and a figure from Evolution. Also using the canvas cover update from Mantis.

Started with the front axle.

Boy, these Aber steering linkages sure are easy to put together!

Looking back, this probably wasn't necesarry, but I wanted to turn the wheels to right.

I added pins to the front wheels for a more positve attachment point.

Early mockup, with wheels dry fitted.

070-L.jpg

Since it would be hard to get inside to paint the interior, I built it in sub-assemblies.

087-L.jpg

080-L.jpg

Nice PE screen in the back...that no one will ever see!

085-L.jpg

Little tiny dashboard..

111-L.jpg

More work on the interior, I found that I had to make the grey color pretty light, to keep
the interior from looking like a giant black hole.

138-L.jpg

Masking, to paint the cross bar.

141-L.jpg

More masking!!! The reason for this is I had already weathered the interior and didn't want overspray.

144-L.jpg

Detailing the...hood? bonnet?...whatever it is...
What you don't see is there is actually a piece of brass rod soldered to the little bracket that
holds the belt that holds the propeller up. It runs through the hood, is bent and held in place
with a blob of Apoxie. I knew it would be a struggle to install that belt and didn't want it to keep
popping off.

149-L.jpg

And here I am struggling with that belt...Ain't gonna work, I ended up using lead foil
with a PE buckle glued to it.

151-L.jpg

More masking, nice little stencil included in the Aber set. The Tamiya decal sheet includes
this, but only in black, I thought white on grey would look better.

154-L.jpg

Came out pretty good, I was worried though...

156-L.jpg

And here it is, ready for paint. Most of the resin bits and some other doodads are only dry fitted.

158-L.jpg

164-L.jpg

There's the lead foil strap, I really like it.

Hope to give it some more paint this afternoon, thanks for looking!!!

Comments, questions, critiques and heavy sarcasm most welcome!

Man, enjoyed the ride so far Tom. Were you being sarcastic about the steering linkage?

Tamiya Schwimmwagen 1/35

Ah...sorry, slow on the uptake.

Well at least it's brass, you could solder if needed. I had some lack of ease on that Royal set for the 8rad.

I have quite a few Aber sets in the stash, but I think I'll look elsewhere in the future.

So much of it falls in the "You gotta be kidding me!!!" category.

Hi Luiz, thank you very much!

Yes, the seats were painted with oils. After the oils dried, I applied a thin buff wash,
to add a dusty look in the seams.

Love it, love, love it! This is one of the more "sci-fi" vehicles of WWII to me- just look at those 1969 seats! How did they know? :D. My brother has a friend with a Ford GPA- he calls it a horrible car and a horrible boat, but he'd never consider anything else.

Keep on truckin', Tom!

Such attention to detail, love that stenciled data plate.

Thanks Guys!

The schwimmwagen has a special place in my heart, it was the first Tamiya
Military Miniature I ever built, back in...1973??!! :woohoo:

Looks great so far!! Nice detail. I like seeing a model with all the PE on it before painting, sometimes looks so much more impressive when you see all the brass bits standing out from the rest of the model.

What's the kit # on the Aber pe set , I'd like to get one .

Hi Chris
Thanks, I know what you mean, it's cool to see all the brass before it's all blended together
with paint.

Thank you Cheyenne!

The Aber set is 35080. Honestly though, if I were to build another I would look
at a different brand. A lot of the parts don't fit, need to be modified or are
just plain impossible to put together. That's probably true of a lot of PE, but
some of this was really frustrating.

One thing I did learn was, don't go chopping up the plastic part until you've
built the PE one, you might need it.

Hi Guys

Got some painting done, but not before some very tedious masking:

And paint:

The DEF Models wheels come with some handy masks, they almost fit. No matter though, they worked great!

I've started the weathering, and am at the stage where you go "Ah crap, I just ruined the whole thing"...hopefully not...

Comments, critiques and questions most welcome.

Oh and just had to add this:
