Tamiya Schwimmwagen 1/35...Update 10/17/14

Tamiya Schwimmwagen 1/35...Update 09/22/14

Thanks guys!

Hey Ron, the thought did cross my mind, but I think I'll be lucky just to get it painted.

Btw, were SS camo Zeltbahns very common?

Yes Sir,if you study photo's of SS infantry in full gear you will find out there are much more Zeltbahns in camo colors then in Field Grey and variations of that color.
The Zeltbahn in it self was very common gear.
Also it was not only used for making tents or the use of a poncho, they used it over the standard
Field Grey uniform to improve camouflage if camo smocks or the Pea Dot uniform were not available.
I've seen a picture were they used the Zeltbahn as stretcher, and once I've seen a picture of several zeltbahns that covered a tank as use of camo.

Hi Guys

Been working on the blanket in the back seat, trying to make it look less like a rubber blanket, as shown here:

002-L.jpg

and more like a wool blanket. I was kicking myself for not adding some texture while the putty
was still pliable. Then I had a thought:

016-L.jpg

Using a stubby brush I stippled some of this gel stuff on:

Then I tried some of this stuff:

018-L.jpg

I think this has a glossy look and seems to have some kind of ground up paper fibers in it,
but it looked pretty cool:

After some pigments and a wash, it started to look more blankety:

So here's where I am now:

And some mud!

This is destined for a small dio, so I think I'll take a break from this and start painting
some figures for it.

Thanks for looking! Comments & critiques welcome!

Blended fibers? Liqutex has freakin' everything don't they? Tom the first shot with the blended fiber stuff looked out of scale, second...NAILEDIT! Absolutely amazing!

Great work Tom! (y)

Hey,thank you for introducing the Blended Fibers medium to us,I might like to try it someday.
Always have a soft spot for muddy and dusty vehicles,I like it!

Greetings,Ron.

Thanks guys!

The acrylic gel stuff is pretty cool, I'm finding more and more uses for it.

They also make a "Resin Sand" type, just add cheap craft store acrylic paint,
and ya got mud!

The weathering on that Shwimmer is fantastic. The fabric really looks quite realistsic! I also thought the dirt clods stuck to the wheel well were right on. What did you use for the wheel well dirt clumps?

Thanks Mr.T!

Hey Paul

The mud was made from:

Acrylic Matt Gel Medium
Decorative Sand (you can get a bag cheap at Jo Anns, Micheals...etc)
Some Plaster of Paris
Craft store acrylic paint
And a little water

After it dried I added some washes and pigments, still needs work, but I want to
wait and blend it into the dio base.

Thanks for your comments,
Tom
