Love the Ron Popeil reference! I do have that report too but remember a disconnect in translations.

OK, the repair manual for the KV has these illustrations...

Caption to figure 69 is "Pressing out of the drive shaft using device No. 4098" so perhaps I am thinking drive shaft and the British report calls it an axle? For some reason it didn't click with me! DOH!

Caption to figure 70 is "Removal of the driving wheel from the bracket with the help of device № 3916"

Caption to figure 71 is "Pressing the drive wheel onto the bracket using tool No. 5212."

While I am glad to learn something, the one in trouble now is @Jeeves as now he sees the detail missing! Oops!

The russians didn't use the word axle (ось) preferring to use shaft.

Fairly that can be stated as a “distinction without a difference”
That is axle versus axle shaft or just shaft. All do the same job in the context.
