Something Completely Different

Iron Mike

Master At Arms And Resident Curmudgeon
It's been a long, hot summer with no relief in sight, so I've switched gears. My wife found some plans for a hummingbird bath and asked me to build her one. I cheated a bit and bought the table (couldn't build it that cheap or fast) but the rest was scratched together.

Copper piping, aquarium pump and a plastic tote round out the construction and my wife did the aquascaping. Surf's up birdies!

Very nice! Any plants around to attract them? If so, which are they? We have a few types of hummingbirds visiting and would love to increase the frequency.

Regards,

Michelle has planters full of Lantana, Red Salvia, Million Bells and such that attract the birds year after year. We've been fortunate to have many birds from year to year, they are so much fun to watch and Michelle even had an article published in Birds and Blooms Hummingbird edition a couple years ago.

We have several feeders, filled with homemade sugar water for our guests. So far lots of recon sorties being conducted, but no bathers as yet.

Cool! :good: It fairly begs fo some kind of Vessel for display. Disney's Nautilus Submarine, perhaps? :ro:

Very cool Mike . Never even entered my mind before .

Guess I figured they could always use my pond and the Lily pads :idonno

To be honest Saul I have little around the house and they always come where the food is .

It was scary to go outside when I had feeder on all corners of the house . Nothing but air wars everywhere .

Out West they would even drink from coke cans.

Cheers, Christian B)

Very cool.

The kids have used old spice containers (with the red top) to make feeders years ago. It was pretty amazing to watch them feed while we were hanging out a few feet away. Unfortunately it doesn't take long for the yellow jackets to start swarming in late summer too, so we were usually forced to take them down.

Nice work!

My wife put in a bunch of plants at our last house that were supposed to attract humming birds. They did attract them, and every time I went out the front door they attacked me! Never realized how territorial those little buggers are! :fencing

Mike

Not only are they territorial and aggressive over food but they fly around corners with great disregard for flight safety .
I use to think that someday I would have to go to the hospital to have one removed from my skull or worse an eye.
I have been buzzed more than once.

Cheers, Christian B)

We had this incident back a few years, the subject of Michelle's article.
