Mud on tracks

Men, Ladies,

I found these pictures in the collection and I thought these would be of help.

These pictures are of my Bradley on the wash rack at Ft Hood. These are brand new vehicles as you can tell by the paint and they are just coming in from a 1 week field trip.
At the time we had to dig the mud out of all the road wheels and wash the vehicles down.

Now, this is dirt encrusted tracks after one week at Ft Hood Texas. Not your average European mud, but I figure it is a good reference for painting and weathering. A well used vehicle does not have rusty tracks. To the pictures!

A brand new Bradley - we received them a couple of weeks earlier with zero hours on the meter. (Jan 1985)

I've been toying with some ideas. Here in my back yard (fort worth TX) I have some really fine dirt. I scraped some up and sifted out the larger pieces. I paint on some gloss coat and while it is still wet I press the track down into the dirt container. It looks fine enough to pass muster.

Here are some examples I tried.

This was my first try on a M60. I left the dirt the original color. (don't mind the thumb print on the tracks. I just noticed it myself when I took the picture... LOL)

Then I tried it on a M48 and I "washed" the dirt with Tamiya water color hull red.

I just did this Sherman, I left the dirt original color but mixed in some static grass to add some texture and color.
