MiniArt Grant Mk.1

fitted the sides and some other parts.. what i said earlier about accumulative error is becoming more apparent as more structural parts (sides etc) are fitted, its not insurmountable yet but i will be amazed if the top/roof fits nicely to this shape made up of these seven (so far) sides.
Having a removable top may be possible but the main gun is not glued, its located between the roof and floor so i may need to fix it permanently.

I have also altered the folding doors on the ammo cabinet so they dont block the view in from the side hatch.
You dont get and instrument decals so i have raided the 1/32 aircraft stash.....Could be the first tank with an altimeter :)

I hope you dont find the images too repetitive but i am trying to show a build sequence.

i have to apologise to MiniArt because i really didn't think the top here would fit as well as it does. In fact its so good i dont think i will glue it ( in the picture its just resting in place) this will enable full interior access.
A very small amount of filling may be required on some joints but negligible TBH.

A point for those building . There are two fixed machine guns pointing forward that are a nightmare to fit if you do it in the instruction construction sequence so bear that in mind when fitting the front panel in front of the driver. wiki says these were removed in later production
anyway which may explain why the holes for them in the front panels are not opened up

Very cool stuff Paddy. I'm starting to stare at my kit now but it still seems a bit over whelming. Loving what you are doing.

The British began issuing a series of modification instructions in December 1941 to be implemented as the Grants went thru the depot before issue. In April 1942 one was issued to remove the two hull 30 cal machine guns and plug the holes.

Rich

I struggled with the running gear. I found i had to shorten the arms that the wheels hang on to get them to fit as a pair on their pivot points.
The model has quite a few pin and hole points to join halves together in a normal fashion however a lot of the holes are too small for the pin dia and a lot of the pins are little more than rounded lumps. With the suspension i found that the rounded lumps actually melted with the normal Revell glue so they no longer give a location. The upshot is i have assembled the wheels but i think they were supposed to hang freely and self align to the tracks however to do that their pivot points would have to have been the lumps that melted. :) so mine are fixed

So far so good Paddy! Still looking good on this build.

I ran into a lot of that same problem when I was building the Russian made kit of the Panzer I F I started last year. In many cases the holes were way too small and not in correct places anyway. The worst area ended being all the running gear. It was better just removing pins, filling the holes, and gluing it all on that kit as well. Wonder if it is something to do with their engineering.

So here is a question for you. Grants were built on Lee Hulls, thus white interiors for the lower hulls. But the British painted interiors silver, and they manufactured the turrets. Would they paint the turret interior silver or white to match the lower hull?

Hi J
They stopped using silver over here because they ran out, war shortages and any that they did have was diverted to the Aircraft industry so for several years from 41-43 ish they used white.

hope that helps

OK so now i have 360 track links and 360 track sections that are to small to pick up with my fat fingers....
I am a complete novice at this so Is there a secret to this ? do i need to build a jig?

A jig will help. @Iron Mike made one from just some wood and I think he ran a router bit down the length.

Actually, it was a saw kerf, run on my table saw. Router works too, but lacking those, you could make one from three pieces of wood, leaving a space between the two top sections. This is what I did.

Well i have spent an hour fiddling about with this and not actually assembled a single link

WHY why why do they do it like this

There are over 700 parts, Each one will need cleaning up under a magnifying glass ,the side plates have to be handled with tweezers,
At any one time you would have to balance 6 pieces together and then get a seventh piece with glue on it exactly in the right position without jogging and of the other 6 pieces :)
Quite frankly although i know it could be done because Mike did his , i think its beyond me, whats wrong with rubber Tamiya tracks on my M10 ?
