Gonna have to learn "the way" on this kind of stuff.I'd suggest silica sand or just plain ol' play sand available at your local big box home improvement center.

I hear ya. I tend to cover up some things with mere weathering on aircraft. Might get a zip lock and just scoop up some.There's usually broken or leaking bags of sand that one can pay very little for, don't pay full price.
